A Vibrant Corner of Paris
Enjoyed a 10-day stay in this sparkling clean, compact, classic and quiet two-bdrm, one-bath in the 14th. Full details follow.
The owner, who speaks impeccable English, lives on site--one floor up. (Her husband's great-grandfather built this and adjacent buildings c. 1911.) She is highly professional, polite and exacting, meeting as planned and offering the clearest of instructions: "Please make sure to turn the faucet out of the way when opening the kitchen window...Please treat the antique wooden doors with care...If you do want me to unlock the windows facing the street" [I did] "please make sure the curtains do not get caught or torn."
By the way, those windows are new, double-paned units and they are extraordinarily efficient. There's not that much traffic out front, but any noise you might hear is blocked. (I noticed more muffled noises and footfalls from the adjacent apartment than I did from the street.)
This un-touristy and vibrant neighborhood boasts restaurants, cafés, bakeries, cheese stores, butcher shops and wine merchants centered around the thriving pedestrian rue Daguerre. Métro, RER and multiple bus lines are all five or six minutes away.
Other pluses? Comfortable queen bed in the master bedroom facing the street, two twins in the bedroom on the courtyard. A snazzy and recently renovated bathroom (shower only) with a heated, wall-mounted towel rack. Separate WC in hallway. New dishwasher. High-quality porcelain dishes and glass stemware.
Things to remember? This is a fifth-floor (U.S.) walk-up. For those who enjoy cooking, there is a cooktop, small microwave and a toaster but no oven. No washing machine or dryer. (Self-service laundromat is located downstairs.) Because the apartment is small you'll find only one nightstand; you get used to putting books, phones and eyeglasses on one of the decorative antique fireplace mantles or on the floor.
One add'l quirk: The light bulbs in the apartment are compact fluorescents. When first switched on they appear dim. But fear not! After a minute they brighten up and provide good illumination.
I look forward to returning!
A perfect stay
The location was as wonderful as described and Elisabeth went above and beyond in helping us navigate the area as well as some personal issues as well. We loved the very walkable neighborhood and the numerous bakeries and cafes. We just got home and I already miss it. We will be back.
We traveled with 2 adults and two 13 year olds. This was our first time in Paris. Elizabeth was spot on in helping us get started on the train system, where to eat and grocery shop. We fell in love with the neighborhood. It feels like a street festival every night. Probably normal but just a lovely atmosphere. Also so close to trains stations and market and...oh the gelato on the way home from the train. So good. We’re in Italy now and still talking about gelato in France.
The apartment is wonderful. As mentioned before it is great for 4 people. Everything is in wonderful condition. The bathroom and kitchen are current and easy to use. I mention this only so you know, because I know I use reviews to help me chose where I stay. The floors are wonderfully wood (I’m guessing original) so there is some creaking. Hardly noticeable except when you have to get up in the middle of the night. However, it didn’t keep anyone up or disturb sleep. Also, the air conditioning definitely keeps the master bedroom cool (air conditioner is a bit loud, but after walking all day, it hardly matters). We slept great every night.
No complaints. Just trying to be up front. We would not hesitate to come back.
Beautiful apartment in great neighborhood!
We have been to Paris a number of times but always spent our time in the central core. It was fun to spend time in a part of the city with a neighborhood feel to it. The Rue Daguerre is a great little market street close to the Metro. Elisabeth is a wonderful host, the apartment beautiful, well-maintained and very clean.
