Delightful home away from home
This house was perfect for our mini family reunion. For my sister, my nephew and me in an area where we have family connections. Everything that we could have wanted was supplied with quality appliances and furnishings. The attractive decor was enhanced by Sue Gilkey’s paintings. Everything very convenient. The garden was really lovely and the patio overlooking Kenmare bay was perfect if only we had had more sunshine. The location very suitable for exploring the entire peninsula.
Thank you Susan for your great review! I am so glad you and your family enjoyed the cottage and the beautiful area.
Thank you very much, Sue, for sharing your cottage with us.
It's incredibly charming with stunning seaside views, tastefully decorated with a geat sense for details and fully equipped - simply, a close to perfect base for a restful holiday. It's obvious that you are living here as well, that you have worked hard and dedicted much passion to make it personal and comfortable. By the way, we like your paintings as well, our favorites are the breakers painting in the living room and the flower still live in the kitchen.
What else to be said?
Visitors should be prepared that some words in Ireland have a slightly different meaning compared to other parts of Europe. Like "beach" or "sunny day". If you are not willing to compromise you should head for the Mediterranean. But we didn't mind and seized any opportunity for a sundowner dinner on the terrace or a refresher in the 17°C cold Sea.
After having checked with the Brian, Sue´s helpful property manager, we enjoyed the fruits, vegetables and herbs of the paradisiac garden: Apple and rhubarbe compote, cooked artichokes spiced with fennel green and thyme (went greatly with monkfish), fresh peppermint tea.
On restaurants: We were surprised that Sue has not recommended "Wild Ocean" in Castletownbere, it seems to offer the best seafood west of Kenmare/Glencariff. It's a pity that the Irish chiefs do not make much more out of their huge natural treasures and, instead, over-mayo and deep-fry the very best raw products ...
So, we recommend: Pack some good books, solid shoes and a watertight jacket, book Sue's cottage - and enjoy the setting.
