We just came off a 4 day stay at this property. Views from the house are very nice and the location was perfect to get to all the spots. Juanita was nice enough to bring us some fresh picked concord grapes and freshly picked apples. The place was nice and there were pleanty of places to relax. There were quite a number of houseflies and we really couldn't pinpoint a source, but they were always there. The house did have a strange and somewhat unpleasant odor which none of us could describe. Just a funk. The hot water also smells of sulfur and is not something you want to brush in. They do provide drinking water, not from the tap.
The smell was because of a water leak in the basement. It has been fixed and the smell is gone. We have a water purifying sytem for the sulfer smell. The flies can be bad in late summer, we have sprayed for them. There should be no problems this summer.
We recently spent a long weekend in the Finger Lakes and stayed at The Highlands. We enjoyed all the local wineries the area had to offer. The Highlands is a great location for this. It overlooks a valley and the sunsets from the deck were beautiful. The property is very neat and clean. They provide everything you need for your stay from linens, towels, drinking water, paper supplies to even a complimentary bottle of wine! The home’s kitchen and bathrooms have been renovated. It would be nice to have a shower curtain for some added privacy. The owners were very responsive when we had questions. Juanita lives on the property in the lower level. However, we never knew she was there. We met her on our last day and had quite a lovely chat with her. All in all, we would recommend The Highlands for your stay in the Finger Lakes.
Great Bicycling Destination
We thoroughly enjoyed the Finger Lakes region for road cycling. The fall colors were starting to really show which added to the beauty of the region. Rugged hills and long valleys presented great opportunities for moderate to difficult rides. Watkins Glen, a short distance away, is a beautiful community with it's car racing heritage, and spectacular scenery (you've got to check out the Gorge!).
The property itself proved to be equally beautiful, situated overlooking a valley, although adjacent to a busy road on a grade exceeding 9%. The place is well appointed but the kitchen pots, pans (no cookie sheets/pizza pans ) + support hardware (good knives, etc) need improvement. (We regularly stay at VRBO destinations, and this one falls short in this respect.) I would recommend staying here but suggest bringing some basic cooking tools, and be prepared that one of the co-owners, Juanita, lives in the bottom walk-out. This is something not disclosed in the property description which would have been nice to know in advance.
The pictures do to the house justice. Well. Kept, clean, quite, and everything you need to cook, grill and just rest and enjoy . We where there for college weekend, my daughter stayed with us and slept like a baby in the queen bed. I can’t say enough positive things about the house. Owners and there son where friendly and helpful. Can’t wait to visit again.
The co-owner, Juanita, was very welcoming. Nice home with a fantastic view from the deck, excellent place to sit and relax with plenty of seating. Unfortunately, we did not see any grazing sheep. The sunsets were amazing, as was the starry night sky. Having a fire pit was a plus. The location was excellent. We were a party of 9 and had plenty of room. Kitchen was pretty well stocked. And it was nice that linens were provided, as well as paper supplies. Lots of hot water and a great shower. WiFi worked great. Enough parking for 4 cars.
Suggestions: Could use some larger pots and pans so you can cook more easily for a large group.
Instructions needed on how to use the TV/Dish TV. Or maybe we just couldn't find them! :)
For privacy reasons, a curtain in the bathroom would be nice.
The only negative was a lack of a washer and dryer.
FYI....I couldn't find it in the description or reviews, but Juanita lives on the premises.
Overall, this is a really nice place to stay. I would definitely recommend this place to others.
