What we liked about our Beach Bungalow stay:
Great layout for 2
Lots of cross ventilation-never used the A/C
Well stocked kitchen
Roomy deck with 4 chairs
Beach chairs, towels, coolers, snorkel equipt
Close to food and liquor stores
Quiet beach at end of lane
Close proximity to many beaches
Not a vacation
The property appeared to be reasonably maintained with the grass cut and the place was clean. However, the front door key code was not working so I had to use the back door which was a hassle. Off and on, some lights would go out and the air-conditioning would not work or the shower would not heat up... All things that let to constant messaging to the property owner which was hassle. It did not feel like a vacation despite the exorbitant price for the property. There was no iron as I had been told and asked to buy one if needed but when I realized this, it was too late...as I was getting ready for new year's evening in Honolulu which was not worth it either. There were mediocre fireworks.
There was only a couple of mediocre restaurants one could walk to but really couldn't because it was raining most of the time. To do anything worthwhile we had to drive at least 40 minutes (because the highway is a one lane highway with a speed limit of 35 miles per hour) which was an inconvenience albeit there were some nice views .
I did not know that North Shore in the winter would be mainly rain and high winds which made it nearly impossible to enjoy the potentially nice beach nearby.. There was only one or two mornings of sun and the remainder of the time we had to drive over one hour to Honolulu which had much better weather although at times, there were high winds there too.
I recommend not going to Oahu in the winter and if you do go, stay in honolulu, and no matter what do not pay more than $150/night given the variation in weather. If we were advised about the difference in weather, the house issues would not have carried much weight.
Also, the internet did not work well for me to get my work done so I could pay for the trip...Owner promised to reimburse-me for these expenses.
Great Location, Clean, Beautiful Property!
My Husband and I stayed here for 5 nights during our trip to Oahu to get married. The property was clean, and it was a great location! Easy walk to the beach to watch the sunrise and swim. Very comfortable bed. AC worked great and cooled the place down fast! Loved the open shower. North Shore Tacos (so delicious!) and grocery store were a short walk/drive away. There is a cool beach rope swing about a ten minute walk North from the house. The grounds of the property were beautifully manicured and it was so nice to be able to sit on the front porch with a beer enjoying the fresh air while our 1 year old daughter played on the fenced in lawn. It was also great to have a washer/dryer. The neighbors were friendly, just don't leave your shoes on the beach, I thought it was beach code not to steal flops but ours got snagged while we were on a short walk in the morning. Oh well! Greg's bungalow is awesome. Mahalo for a wonderful stay! 5 Stars!!!!!
Nice but not great
The bungalow was nice but we had some hiccups. The biggest and worse issue we had were the stains on the sheets and towels. I texted greg and he had his cleaner come in the morning (because we got in at midnight) we were greeted by a woman that was friendly but defended her cleaning. not apologizing for the stains and said things like "it's just from the oils" and "that's just how it is when you stay in a place like this". When I told her I still wanted new linens she gave me the new sheets and towels and said that the stained sheets were the newest ones they had (they looked far from new.) and that all of the sheets probably had stains on them. The older sheets she gave me didn't have stains, thank goodness, but that was a huge issue for me. Maybe you are okay with stained sheets but you shouldn't expect guests to be okay with it. The rest of the bungalow was quite clean and I was pleased with that. The other issue we had was we got locked out of the bungalow. My husband thought I had the key but we left it on the table inside on accident. We do take full responsibility for this incident and we did pay for the lock smith to come and open the door so we could get the key but it was frustrating that the lock pad for the front door was broken and not fixed. And when I reached out to greg he told us about a spare key but it was missing and his response was "one of the previous guests must of taken it by accident" he seemed to be very uncertain about it and what had happened to the key. Like I said we take responsibility for the issue but it would've been nice if he kept his property updated with the functioning lock pad for the front door and the spare key like it is suppose to have. The last issue we had is the noise. There is a rooster that makes some noise at about 6am and the bungalow is close to street so you can hear the morning traffic so sleeping in is tough. However, the beach was so close and it was one of my favorites that we visited and I loved the beautiful surrounding area. The washer and dryer were nice so I didn't have to worry about packing dirty clothes to come home. Overall it was a good stay but not a great stay.
We really appreciate your feedback and constructive criticism as it helps us to be better hosts if we get honest feedback.
We are SOOO sorry that our cleaner reacted defensively. We actually had the same problem with her just a week ago, when we asked that she make sure to check & clean under the beds when needed and to rotate window cleaning - so that a few get cleaned each time. She responded very poorly to these suggestions and is no longer cleaning for us. We are quite picky about linens and would never want stained linens on the beds at all. We buy new linens regularly and we're not sure why she acted like it's normal to have stains. It's not - guests should have clean & fresh smelling linens, of course! She didn't even tell us about this conversation with you. Honestly, we have had trouble with some of the keypads at the house - I think it may be because of the proximity to the water and salt air. It seems like the batteries go dead really fast and we need to research a bit if there's a better brand or if keypads are just not suitable so close to the beach. Greg said he's going to try a manual one and see if that works better. Chickens and roosters are in a lot of residential areas on Oahu - we always close all the windows and use the AC at night to keep the noise out, but the new split air we upgraded to is so quite there's less "white noise" of the AC motor now. The beach up there is one of our favorites as well - it really is why we bought the house. I think it's the perfect distance for a beach walk and our kids grew up playing on the rope swings and making sand castles and collecting driftwood. I'm glad that overall you had a good time and am so sorry that it didn't get off to a good start. Aloha, Greg & Cindy
