Tired villa but in lovely location
We felt that the property needed a bit of upkeep: broken loo seats, only 5 sunbeds for 9 of us, no comfortable seating outside (dining chairs only) etc. Having said that it's a lovely property in a great location, the nearby beaches were fabulous. It's worth noting that to access one of the bedrooms you have to go outside the villa and there isn't a bathroom for that bedroom so it's a bit inconvenient at night, we hadn't appreciated this from the description until we read it again on arrival at the villa!
Family villa located in Colares, a country-side small village near Portuguese historical village Sintra. Colares is a very quiet and welcoming village located in the foot of Sintra´s Mountain.
Praia das Maças and Praia Grande, two of the most important beaches surrounding Lisbon, are 15min walk/5min drive away from the villa, where you will find Atlantic Ocean bathing beautiful big sand beaches. Praia da Adraga, Praia Pequena, Guincho, are other beautiful beaches nearby.
Cascais and Mafra are very nearby, only a 20min drive away. CSintra’s historical centre village is a 15min drive away, located right in the heart of Sintra’s Mountain, a National Natural Protected Area. You will find and feel one of the most important Portuguese’s historical villages, with several monuments, historical castles, aristocratic palaces, ancient charming small streets, caffés and houses, a green, fresh and dense mountain vegetation, hidden waterfalls, and breathtaking mountain views. Sintra’s historical mountain is perfect for long and pleasant walks and treks under the nice portuguese sun and blue skies. Sintra’s centre village is perfect to “get lost” in small, narrow but charming walking streets, filled with small and very welcoming shops, where you will find typical products, modern design products, nice restaurants and caffés. You will be able to visit Palácio da Pena (Pena´s Palace), Castelo dos Mouros (Muslim’s Castle), Palácio de Seteais (Seteais’ Palace), Quinta da Regaleira (Regaleira’s Country Estate), and many others, all of them located in Sintra and Sintra’s Mountain. In many of them, you will find cultural activities, such as opera, classic music and jazz shows, mainly during summer months, as well as exhibitions of different and several forms of art, taking place in venues such as Centro Cultural Olga Cadaval (Olga Cadaval’s Culture Centre), Museu do Brinquedo (Toy Museum), Casa da Cultura (Culture Centre).
Cascais and Mafra are very nearby, only a 20min drive away. Cascais and Mafra, together with Sintra, form a triangle of three of the most charming Portuguese villages. Mafra offers you Convento de Mafra, an important clerical building and an impressive architectural monument. Cascais, formerly a fishing village, situated in a bay, is a coastal village, with a beautiful old centre area, museums, numerous shops and restaurants, bars, discos and nightclubs, and a marina.
Right next to Cascais, you have Estoril, with its Casino, where you can take your chance in the slot-machines and table games, or you can attend to several music and theatre shows all-year long. Between Colares and Cascais, in a beautiful road that surrounds Sintra´s Mountain, where it meats the Atlantic Ocean, you have Cabo da Roca (Roca’s Cape), a breathtaking sightseeing spot over the Atlantic Ocean, where you can appreciate a beautiful sunset, while having a drink or a tea at a bar that used to be a wind-mill.
The villa is 40min drive away from centre Lisbon, where you have the whole city to discover.
Portuguese typical, tastefull and rich gastronomy is present everywhere around Colares and Sintra, either in modern, high-quality restaurants, or in more typical Portuguese restaurants, with equally excellent food, giving you the chance to experience a friendly and familiar atmosphere. Variety of food is enormous, it goes from excellent seafood, to several typical fish or meat dishes. But there are also other types of cuisine restaurants, such as italian, japanese, international cuisine, etc. Portuguese wines you will find as well, from all the areas in Portugal that produce wine, and considering that Colares is a famous wine producing area.
Several outdoor activities and sports are available as well in the area surrounding Colares and Sintra – golf, with numerous golf-courses in a 30min drive range, horse-riding, mountain-bike, trekking, sea-sports like surfing or windsurfing, etc.
