My husband and I recently returned from 7 nights at Moonswept. The house itself is great, but the thing that stands out about it is the view. Oh my...it makes your jaw drop! Absolutely gorgeous.
The house was well equipped with coolers, chairs, towels etc. There was even a drawer with shampoo, bug spray, shaving cream, etc which we appreciated. The kitchen was also well stocked with spices and other things you may need a little of but hate to buy on vacation. The pool was pretty chilly so we didn’t use it much while we were there unfortunately. We loved having the hot tub, which was very nice and worked well for our trip.
The only drawback to this property (and it wouldn’t make us not rent again) is that the hill it is on takes about 5-7 minutes one way on a pretty jarring dirt road just to get to the main road. This adds time and an adventure every time you go out and is something to consider. You are also a little past Coral Bay so it is a pretty long drive into Cruz Bay if that matters to you. But it is that road up that gives you that view and is a trade-off we thought was absolutely worth it!
Moonswept is a great property and I would absolutely recommend it to any future travelers to St John!
This could not have been a more perfect place! To start every morning with this view which is just as advertised was incredible. Garry and Terre (the owners) were always quick to reply to any questions we had prior to our arrival. Thom (their caretaker) was kind enough to check in with us by phone regarding arrival information before we left the states. He gave us directions on where to meet him and had us follow him to the property. After giving us a thorough walk through, he made it very clear we could reach out if we needed ANYTHING. As far as the property itself, it could not be laid out any better to show off the amazing views and take advantage of the breeze. The kitchen has everything you would need as well as an outside grill. We ended up cooking dinner every night so we could enjoy the view and privacy. Being on the Coral Bay side of the island was peaceful and relaxing, yet it wasn't hard to drive to Cruz Bay or any of the beaches or trails on the island. We visited 13 beaches in 6 days as well as did multiple trails all while spending the afternoons poolside. Moonswept's hot tub, pool and outdoor living area are a HUGE added bonus. You could not ask for a better property. It is well kept and clearly taken care of. You definitely do need to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The switchback up to the property is steep and rough but WORTH IT for the view and privacy.
Dear Sara, Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your visit to Moonswept! It was a pleasure to have you and we look forward to your return visit. Have a great holiday season! Your Hosts, Garry and Terre
All details matter (including small ones) as does proper maintenance on a villa of this stature.
Though it may seem minor it really was more than minor. The ice chest provided for the beach was too small - this is not a villa for two, it is a villa for 4-6 people. The ice chest should have been larger. On top of that both sides of the handle were broken so the whole six days that we used the ice chest it had to be carried using 2 hands holding it from underneath. We were going to purchased one ourselves on the island. We went looking to purchase one but in St. John ice chests are limited so we were not able to find one.
This is the third time we have stayed at Moonswept (2012, 2014 & 2019) and she is a nice villa - however - maintenance on a villa of this level should be kept fairly tight. I would estimate 1 out of every 3 windows had issues with the crank system (used to open and close the windows) so therefore those windows could not be opened/closed.
Dear Douglas, we are sad to hear that the lack of a large cooler and faulty window cranks spoiled your appreciation of Moonswept. Coincidentally we are the next guests to arrive here and were also surprised to find the large cooler missing. Did you ask the caretaker about it? We went yesterday to the hardware store and bought one which she would have been able to do for you as well. We've been waiting for the window cranks to come from Andersen Windows for 6 months. They arrived and were installed this week. Of course this does not change the fact you had to live with them during your stay and for that we apologize. But did you notice the many features about Moonswept that have been upgraded since your visit in 2014? You may know that the worst Atlantic hurricane in recorded history, Irma, hit here in 2017. Then came Maria 2 weeks later. Since the storms all of us here on St. John have had our hands full working to restore things. Here at Moonswept we have added air conditioning in all the rooms, a heated pool, brand new windows in the great room, a new refrigerator, washing machine and dishwasher and Tesla batteries that power the solar panels which means no more power outages when the rest of the island goes dark. All of these upgrades pale compared to the natural beauty of the island itself and the sweeping view of the sea and her islands from Moonswept. We are sorry you were not able to enjoy all these things. We hope the rest of your summer goes better for you. Your Hosts, Garry and Terre
