Everything we hoped it would be - & more!
Our family (husband, wife, & two adult children) stayed here for one week in December 2019.
The house itself is comfortable and charming, colourfully decorated with nautical paintings, photos and homey touches. The living room and 2 of the 3 bedrooms open up to the expansive outdoor veranda, and a magnificent view to the Atlantic Ocean! The covered veranda is where we hung out whenever we were “at home”. It has a hammock, a sizable dining table and chairs, and a good number of very comfortable lounge chairs. In front of the veranda, is a small open patio where we could “sun” ourselves if we wanted.
The hosts had thought of everything to make our stay as pleasant as possible. All towels, beach chairs, toiletries, washer & dryer, CD player & CD’s, plenty of fridge & freezer space was all there if we needed it. Since restaurants are not close by, we cooked many meals in the well-appointed kitchen. The hosts provided every cooking pot, pan, utensil imaginable, plus accoutrements such as spices, teas, vinegar etc. that we didn't have to purchase, but appreciated having. The owner even provided a delicious (secret recipe) rum punch for us to enjoy!
The beds were very comfortable, and the sheets and bedding were good quality and very clean. Each bed came with mosquito netting above it, but we didn’t really need it when we were there. Even though there is no screening on the windows or doors, the warm breeze off the ocean meant that no insects were ever an issue. That breeze was also heavenly to sleep with!
The house is located high on a cliff, overlooking the ocean, and a beach we could walk down to, and swim if we wanted, (though there are much nicer swimming beaches on the island).
The hosts have made it very clear in their write-up that the house is aptly named. “Further Away” is definitely located far away from Restaurants, Bars, Grocery stores and most amenities. Also, the east coast of the island is not as popular for tourists and is not as built-up as the south and west coasts. But if one is looking for a quiet get-away, to relax and regenerate, where nature is still somewhat untouched, this is simply a spectacular location!
We'll never forget that view – at sunrise, with the sun rising over the ocean, in the glorious sunshine of the day, and at night – with reflected moonlight on the water. It was a magical, memorable, magnificent holiday- Thank you Caroline!
PS: The Barbadian people are exceptionally happy, friendly & helpful.
Breathtaking views, relaxing atmosphere, great accommodations.
Farther away was the perfect getaway if you're looking for a place to escape from the hustle and bustle. We loved spending quite evenings and early mornings on the enormous deck. Caroline was very accommodating in getting us acquainted with Barbardos, meeting us as the airport, stopping on the way home at a market, and making sure we arrived safely at Father Away. Of course, you can't stay here and not mention the Rum Punch. It was truly the best we had on the island! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage and would not hesitate to stay there again.
Farther Away is a hidden gem on the East Coast. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. The house is well equipped and cozy. Caroline was helpful throughout the whole booking process and arrival, helping us to get to the villa safe and sound. We highly recommend to rent a car if staying at Farther Away. It is a 30 minute drive to get to the beaches on the south coast. Inquire about the Sargassum seaweed before booking as the beach was covered with it. The east coast is more affected by it. However, this did not affect our overall experience with the house. It should just be noted if you plan to use the beach throughout your whole stay. Barbados is a beautiful island, as is Farther Away. Thank you for a great family trip.
Stunning location, home from home
What a fabulous place! Clean, spacious, private and very well equipped. The location right by the coast is amazing. Waking up with the sound of the waves every morning is very relaxing. You definately need a car to get around though. We spent most of our days on the west coast for the calm sea and this takes about 30 mins to drive. It was so nice to come back to Farther Away in the evening to chill and play dominos on the deck with the children. Caroline is a great host, she met us at the airport, which after a long flight is superb - nothing worse than arriving in the dark and getting lost trying to find your accommodation! She was always on hand by phone during our stay for any advice we needed. Overall we were really pleased with the accommodation and would have no hesitation in booking the cottage if we return to Barbados. Our only regret is we didn’t stay for two weeks. If you want peace and quiet in a beautiful setting then this is the perfect place to stay.
Excellent lodging, reasonable price, amazing ocean views, all in a friendly neighbourhood!
Great place, great views, and Caroline was amazingly helpful during our stay. She greeted us at the airport, had us follow her to the grocery store, then to the lodging. She checked in with us a number of times during our stay, ensuring all was well, seeing if there was anything that we needed, and then, dropped by and saw us off on our last day.
Not knowing that we were there during a full moon, the sun had set, we were sitting on the back deck, when we all saw a faint amber light, shimmering over the ocean. What is that?! Is it a boat? Is it a UFO?! What is that?! It was, of course, the rising of the moon. We were fortunate to have had a clear night that night, and because of that, we had an unobstructed view of it rising into our night. Truly magical!
Caroline suggested the use of the bug nets at night. The first night, we never bothered. When we awoke the next morning, we had some mosquito bites. Lesson learned. The ensuing nights we all used them. We really appreciated the nets, as we chose to leave the window slats open during the night, enjoying the sound of the surf, and the cool ocean breezes. On those nights when the mosquitos did visit, and with the nets down, there was not really much of any problems.
If you are a sensitive or light sleeper, consider bringing some ear plugs, as on some nights, the surf did get loud due to higher winds and surf.
Thanks for the opportunity to stay, and thanks for your kind, personal service and smiles. What a great place and what a great hostess!
