nice pictures, poorly run, not on beach, not a resort, not a hotel, no housekeeping, no usable safe
DO NOT Confuse this El Castillo with the El Castillo Resort on the Oso Peninsula (South Pacific Costa Rica) which is likely the resort with all the positive comments, or the Tango Mar Resort a short distance away. In our room: no working safe - no key; no place to put clothes except floor or on the bed; lots of bugs, no screens on windows; open vents to adjoining room - no privacy; no place to hang a towel or store a toothbrush; shower didn't drain; half of the light bulbs out and not replaced; no way to regulate a/c - it was on or off - per management policy; no bedding other than a sheet upon arrival; 2 small worn towels provided; no daily housekeeping - only on request and only if we were there to provide access as all keys "lost by previous guests" according to management. Most issues brought to the attention of Sonia (owner/manager), who made promises but did not follow through; however a small fridge and additional towels were provided. General facility comments: internet poor and intermittent and only in the common areas - one of the guests would reset it to get it to work; $10 cash only cold egg & toast breakfast; no lunch available; common area coffee available if another guest makes it; the "reception area" is open 24 hours but not staffed at all; no real security; the pool is murky and several lounge chairs broken; there is no ocean view unless you are at the top tower room; the nearest beach is at least a 20 minute walk down a dirt road; no business center (one is advertised); no coffee shop/cafe/room service (also advertised); there is a "community kitchen" but it's very basic and needs attention; most staff speak Spanish only. On the plus side, the shower water was hot and the other guests were friendly and fun (misery loves company?) and the staff member Sylvia is wonderful - if she leaves, the manager is in real trouble. The seasonal third party, cash only, dinner hours only restaurant/bar is very nice (closed Tuesday). Tango Mar Resort, a short drive away, has a nice beach and restaurant, and is an actual resort. In fact, Sonia advised us to go to that beach. Playa Tambor is a nice area but a car is necessary. If you've read this far, please know that we were not alone in our observations and don't consider ourselves high-maintenance. Obviously we can NOT recommend this facility.
