A Simply Perfect Desert Home

5 of 5
A simple, perfect retreat in a beautiful location. What is amazing about this place is, well, pretty much everything. The location is on the very edge of Joshua Tree making it incredibly private, very close to the park and to the town, accessed by the slightly wild roads that are typical of JT. As people who love good design, we marvelled at the deeply considered every aspect of this place—the way it is sited for pure enjoyment of the desert, the extraordinary quality of everything (REAL Noguchi lighting fixtures, polished concrete floors, great and comfortable furniture, fine quality towels, sheets and blankets, Bliss toiletries, right down to glasses, pots and pans that made us want to find the nearest Sur La Table and buy all the same ones), the compact ecology of the interior. Rarefied but understated luxury. During our winter stay, we’d wake up early with a great sense of anticipation for an outdoor shower. Looking west the moon was setting, and the sunrise in the east framed by the canopy that also shelters the house from the hot sun. We much appreciated the high-functioning design of the kitchen—great SMEG gas stove, fully appointed kitchen far beyond basics. We called the long horizontal view from the kitchen “bunny TV” for the desert hares who were part of the desert cast of wildlife. Judith, the talented designer who owns this house, is a great host. She lives in the house next door and is respectfully invisible and promptly responds to any questions. Instruction sheets provide easy guides to using everything (the digital TV that pivots between the bedroom and living area, the heat exchange/AC units that temper the surprisingly dramatic swings in temperature that occur even on a daily basis). This is a rare and exceptional place for those who seek the simple pleasures of an extraordinary landscape amplified by holistic design. We wanted to stay forever.

Perfect Stay

5 of 5
We enjoyed our stay here. The pictures do not do this little place justice. We got there late and the door was unlocked for us. Everything was clean and put together. We will come back again.
