We very much enjoyed our stay in “La Carline”. The house is spacious and very clean, the interior/rooms are nicely decorated. The house has all modern commodities (e.g. dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, coffee filter, electric heating) and at the same time the charm of an old mansion (functional open chimney and large wooden table in the dining room). There are two terraces where one could eat outside and a garden with trees and flowers.
The owners are very friendly and helpful, know the region very well and gave us lots of great tips about interesting visits in the area. One should be able to speak a little bit of French, although the owners were forthcoming and tolerant with our poor French. The booking of the house, the closure of the rental contract, the arrangements regarding arrival and departure, all went smoothly and without any problems.
The house is on the country site in a tiny, quiet helmet located close to the Grads Causses and Templar castles, the landscape is wonderful. A car is needed for going shopping or going out for dinner.
We would recommend this house without any reservation and intend to come back one day.
The pictures on the web site give a good idea of the gite. The owners are very friendly and accommodating and the location is perfect for visiting the surrounding area. It is within 1/2 hour of Roquefort (where the famous cheese is made), 1/2 hour from wonderful Templier fortified towns and 1/2 hour from a large town for shopping (St. Affrique). There are numerous hikes both nearby and within 1/2 hours drive. We especially enjoyed the hike behind Tournemire (near Roquefort) and two hikes, one 5k one 10k, around the Templier town of Couvertoirade (get maps for the hikes in Couvertoirade at their Tourism Office).
The master bedroom is large and comfortable, the kitchen is well laid out and we appreciated the full set of pots and pans. The inside dining table has room for 4, but it is a bit tight. The living room is comfortable, though a bit dark because this is a super old stone house and they didn't have many windows way back when it was built. The downstairs bathroom has a shower, sink and toilet, the upstairs has a separate shower then a WC with sink and toilet. One of the best parts is that there is a covered veranda out front with table and chars as well as a deck out back (perfect for cocktails in the evening). There is also a nice shared pool that is solar heated which we used once (it was starting to get cool towards the end of September).
Note, this gite is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so count on cooking in. If you plan to arrive on Saturday, be sure to do enough shopping to get you through Monday morning. There is no boulangerie (bakery) very nearby, but the owners have bread delivered each day and offer this service to those in the gite. We ordered a baguette per day, but you can order as many as you wish. Additionally, Sabine has chickens on the property and when they are laying you can purchase fresh eggs which are fantastic.
The only downside we encountered is that the advertised internet access was very spotty. Sometimes it worked, often it didn't. Since we use the web to plan hikes and keep in touch, it was a bit of a pain.
Overall we had a wonderful time here.
