My wife and I have a permanent camping (glamping really) site in Wisconsin where we spend about 60 days hunting, fishing, and loving everyday. We close camp each year in November and this year needed a much warmer location to spend our December wedding anniversary. We found this great property on VRBO and Nestor took care of the rest.
The property is located just beyond mainland Florida not quite 80 miles from Ft Lauderdale-Hollywood airport. It is another 7.5 miles down Hwy 1 to the Winn Dixie store where we picked up all the supplies we needed for our vacation. Mile marker 0 in Key West is 113 miles (and a cool drive might I add). The trailer is backed up to the water and very private given there is a trailer on each side of this one. Nester has done a great job carving out seclusion in a rather crowded neighborhood. The entrance to the neighborhood is gated and the neighborhood was quiet and clean during our entire stay. We found ourselves leaving the back window open to allow the ocean breeze and sounds to come in.
The accommodation was a nearly new slide-out travel trailer. Everything in the trailer worked well. For some reason the water heater was not turned on upon our arrival, but Nestor came as soon as we contacted him to turn it on. Two electric heaters were provided for the cool winter days and the air conditioning worked well. A coffee maker and toaster oven are provided but a hair drier is not. The kitchen was well stocked with plates, glasses, and many other odds and ends from frequent use. There is a TV with DirecTV service in the main living area of the trailer. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. The sofa pulls out into a bed making max occupancy four, but three would fit more comfortably.
All-in-all we had a great time and made many memories traveling from Key Largo to Key West during our stay. It was perfect for just the wife and me.
If you've read the other reviews then you already know that the owner responds to negative reviews almost universally with "you should have contacted me to give me the opportunity to address your concerns." Well, I have. On my second day there I wrote him a friendly email with a 5 item list of issues, some of them major. From his responses I deduce that this is a man that needs to be right and make his property sound good rather than listen to feedback. A simple "will take care of it" would have gotten him a positive review, but as his responses were rather on the skeptical side, I was seriously tempted to give it 3 stars and not 4.
The main issue with the trailer, in my opinion, is that it is significantly off-level (tilted). This in an of itself is only a source of minor discomfort due to doors that swing open and the mattress that works its way down-slope through the night. The real issue is that due to the design of the bathtub, all water running down the shower walls promptly winds up on the kitchen floor and soaks into the kitchen carpet and particle-board furniture. This is not a plumbing leak, since this would immediately stop happening if the trailer was brought back to level.
I feel that the issue is significant for two reasons:
1) It's unpleasant to step on soggy carpet each time you sit down to eat, and it took about 3 days to dry once we found a way to avoid the spill, see below.
2) The furniture is visibly falling apart due to long-term moisture damage, which, it has been my experience, always goes with mold growth and is thus a health concern.
The owner did not agree with either of my observations on the above, preferring to tell me that the trailer is not significantly tilted and that there is no mold because "he has never smelled any". I'll let that speak for itself. To his credit, he offered a refund for the remaining stay, something that I declined because clearly it would be too late to find affordable accommodations on a moment's notice.
If you do stay here, be sure to place a towel on the hallway floor to arrest the flow of water. A dry towel is usually able to absorb the amount produced during a short shower.
I gave it 4 stars because the location is great and the trailer is well-stocked with pretty much everything you might need. And Nestor, it would be much easier to level the trailer than to deal with disappointed renters.
