When we arrived to Howler Monkey the first thing we saw in the trees were Howler and Capuchin monkeys! We also saw iguana, giant toads, geckos and quite a few birds. Jim introduced our two kids (6 & 8) to his dogs, showed us the cabana and provided us with a ZOOM Nicoya Peninsula guidebook which proved to be very useful during our stay. The cabanas could use a little TLC and are not for the faint of heart as it is a jungle stay and there will be the occasional critter in the bathroom, etc. We saw more wildlife at the Howler than we did at the Cabo Blanco Nature Rerseve so we were very happy with this! We walked to the cemetery island at low tide and it was very interesting to see. The beach is rather rocky but great for searching for sea shells and watching hermit crabs. The kids swam in the pool nearly every day and quickly befriended the dogs. The hotel is located a little off the beaten path so it is nice and quite there. There are local restaurants, mini-super markets and a bakery within walking distance. We spent a lot of time in the nearby town of Montezuma to swim in the ocean and to see the sights. Costa Rica is truly a fabulous country and we hope to come back some day!
