We enjoyed a beachfront stay at Villa Leone del Mar over the Christmas and New Years holidays. Our group included adults and small children. Carlos is a great bi-lingual host and made every effort to make our stay enjoyable including contacts for surfing, boogie boards, seafood restaurant recommendations, and even taxi service to the airport. He is very responsive to texting and was readily available. Carlos provided detailed directions and an accurate GPS map pin. Most of the route from Managua is well-maintained pavement. The side streets are rough and steep.
The location is right on the beach with beautiful views, private beach access, and secure parking for several vehicles. This area is quiet and not overly touristy. The fishermen's fresh fish market was a short drive down the beach.
There are many beautiful places to enjoy the view, rest in the shade, watch the sunset, or gaze at the stars, in large groups or privately. The hammocks and rockers were very popular! The children could wander throughout the property safely and had lots of space to play. The beach is uncrowded, fairly clean, and comfortable for swimming, boogie boards, walking, and searching for shells and sand dollars.
The rooms were comfortably sized and beds were clean and comfortable. The caretakers only speak Spanish but were very helpful and kind. There's a huge commercial refrigerator and a separate freezer (wasn't working properly). There are no pantry items so be prepared with your own. There are supermarkets on the way, but only small markets nearby.
There were a few things to detract. There could be more pots, pans, and knives in the kitchen. There weren't quite the same number of beds in some rooms as noted and no sheets for the sofa bed. There are no spare towels or sheets, but arrangements can be made for them to be laundered. Sometimes there was no water (quickly remedied) and definitely no hot water. You do need to be conservative with water. Bathrooms could be cleaner. Some showerheads didn't spray well. Be aware that the caretakers quarters are outside some rooms. Nicaraguans are early risers. The pool was lovely the first few days but isn't chemically treated and turned green. There is AC but it will add electric usage. The strong breeze cooled and kept most bugs away, but also blew a lot of dust and leaves.
This is a fabulous location and suited our group of adaptable, experienced international travelers looking for a restful place to reconnect.
Rancho Santana is totally amazing and the house is fantastic. It has everything you need, is very quiet, clean (great remodel), has good working AC, beautiful views and proximity to excellent surf breaks. What else do you need?! Book your trip!
