We loved our stay at Castellina in Chianti! Daniele's farmhouse is adorable and comfortable and he was most accommodating with any request we had. The farmhouse is in a great location very close to town which made evening dining out very doable. Our first week was spent hiking (often directly from the farmhouse) in the morning and exploring nearby hilltowns in the afternoons. Since it was somewhat off season for tourists we found the towns to be easy to explore--the hardest part was making sure lunch locations were open, but locals were helpful with this. We went to Florence for the annual Christmas tree lighting--in fact, it was fun to see the trees and decorations in all the towns! There was a Christmas market in Siena with stall after stall of Italian foods and crafts. We also enjoyed a trip to Cinque Terre and hit a beautiful sunny day for a hike along the shoreline. If you have a small family, this is a perfect location to stay--we did have a couple join us for the second week which was fun, but the living space can be a little small for four adults (probably better in the warmer weather when you can use the back porch which is wonderful). Otherwise, it is a beautifully appointed farmhouse with very nice bathrooms and all the extras you could need! Enjoy!
Siena is not flat. Access to the apartment is on a steep street. Had difficulty finding the access code box - look to the left door frame and there it is (not in centre of door). Made a call to the owner as we could not find the correct key for the apartment. The housekeeper was in the apartment and the key was sorted out. Be patient with the key in the door - it is and older building and not North American style. The apartment itself is not modern. The bed is comfy. The apartment is clean - but old (about 600 years old). But the location is fantastic. Close to Campo, restaurants, shopping, and points of interest. Walking to all is easy - did I mention that Siena has hills. We would consider to stay here again. Thank you to the landlord (Luca) for being so kind and responsive.
