Lety and Erika were both amazing! The only reason I gave 4 stars is because the air conditioner on the top floor stopped working and we ran out water on the last day. we only had 5 people so that would probably be an issue if there were more people. The house only truly sleeps 6 guests in my opinion unless one person is willing to sleep on the couch.
Everything else was great! My only advice is be sure to secure a taxi driver that is willing to be on call since the house is a little ways from the beaches and ruins.
Casa Maramaya is one of several newly built, modest but lovely apartments in a new area (Colonia Veleta) at the South edge of the City of Tulum. The area is inland and adjacent to the inland border of Sian Ka’an, the UNESCO designated Biosphere Reserve. It is away from traffic, the associated noise, and is in a quiet and safe neighborhood. The apartments are within a gated garden with a small swimming pool and grill and each apartment has its own outdoor sitting area. The kitchen is equipped sparely but adequately and has a gas stove and dependable hot water. Tiled bath. Potable water was furnished in a large bottle by the hosts. The bedrooms both have air conditioning that is quiet and a necessity for Northerners not used to sleeping at the temperatures of the tropics. The brightly painted rooms are clean and tastefully appointed with furniture made locally and decorated with handcrafted mirrors and decorations woven from native fibers.
A newly opened, small natural foods grocery, named Gypsea, on Avenida Tulum, operates a grill for steaks, chicken, pizza and bar and is within 800 meters. Most restaurants are located on Avenida Tulum in the town center a few kilometers to the NE. The beach, the beach hotels and resorts, and the Tulum archeological site are North and East of the main part of town. The beach and beach resorts are all located on a single – and very congested – access street about 2 kilometers East of the town center. They are accessible from Maramaya by collective bus, taxi or bicycle but because of the traffic, require significant travel times. Bicycle is the preferred means of getting to the beach.
The apartment is on a currently unpaved and rutted street covered with crushed limestone about 120 meters East of Calle 7, a main connecting street leading to this part of Tulum. It is partly illuminated at night and is but a short taxi ride (40 pesos = $2) from the city center. As the area (Colonia Veleta) is new and street signs non-existent, the taxi drivers may need coaching to find the apartment. Onsite parking for vehicles is available.
Karyne and Sephano are friendly and welcoming hosts who live on the premises. Karyne has good English and was very helpful in orienting us to the local services, the ruins, and the beach, and for helping us plan our activities and engage local tours for the week. We had wonderful experiences on our post-Christmas holiday here in this small Mexican town on the Caribbean.
