“Same-city” origin trend on the rise for vacation home travelers

“Same-city” origin trend on the rise for vacation home travelers

There’s no place like your hometown for vacation. At least, that’s what the Vrbo 2020 Trend report found in its analysis of domestic vacation home demand. Travelers in urban markets across the country are booking vacation rentals in their own city. Vrbo is seeing the trend in destinations like Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta and more.

So what’s the cause of this trend? It might be another emerging travel phenomenon coming into play: the cele-cation, when families and friends from different places come together to celebrate special occasions. Whether you need more space for your family to visit for the holidays or to celebrate a birthday, families and friends who live in town may rent local vacation homes to accommodate large groups or guests.

To take a deeper look at the trend, take a peek into properties from the trending same-city destinations that have raving reviews of travelers celebrating and creating lifelong memories.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

This is a living room featuring bright blue velvet couches.

This modern 4-bedroom home in North Philadelphia was rented in September to celebrate a birthday. The home is so spacious, perfect for a gathering with friends and family, and even has a private rooftop!

“Great spot in Philly: We rented Nate’s place for a birthday celebration with 10 guests. The place was great — everyone has their own space. We were worried the living space would be too small for us, but when we got in the living room it was much bigger than expected, which was great.”

Atlanta, Georgia

This is a house with a beautiful front porch in Atlanta, Georgia.

Memories were made in this Victorian manor in Midtown Atlanta for a family celebrating 50 years of wedded bliss in April 2018. This historical restored home has five bedrooms and is within walking distance of Piedmont Park.  (5 stars, April 2018)

“A memory for the family: Our family celebrated my parents’ 50th anniversary here. What a special long weekend! The house is elegant, unique, with so many thoughtful touches and space for a large family (8 adults and 1 infant). We especially loved sitting outside on the porch, chatting, listening to the fountain and looking at the trees and skyline. It’s residential, yet everything in midtown is so convenient. We walked to Piedmont Park every day. This is a wonderful property that will leave you with great memories of Atlanta.”

Rent this Victorian manor

Chicago, Illinois

This is a living room decorated with light colors.

This beautifully decorated apartment was rented this November for Thanksgiving. Located in Uptown Chicago, you are steps away from public transport to take you to all of Chicago’s attractions with out of town guests, and have space for up to 10!

“Chicago Perfect: We had a really great stay at this property for Thanksgiving. The owner, Josh, was incredibly responsive to all of my inquiries, wanting to assure a comfortable stay. Plenty of space for our family of seven. Since this is a first-floor VRBO, you do hear activity upstairs, but that’s the charm of these older Chicago properties. This is a great location to Wrigleyville, a quick drive or leisurely walk. We had no issues parking our two cars in the neighborhood, which I really appreciated. I’d reserve this property again – no question about it.”

Looking for a place for a mini-reunion? Look no further than this gorgeous property in the Oak Lawn neighborhood of Dallas, where this traveler had a mini-reunion with college friends this November. This hidden gem is perfectly situated in a quiet residential street but near everything you need.

“Great for a girls weekend: Stayed here for a mini-reunion with a couple of college friends and it was perfect. Beautiful neighborhood with easy access to great restaurants and shops. The unit is really comfortable — kitchen is well-stocked, beds are comfy, and there’s a nice back patio when the weather is suitable. A great choice for a small group or family.”
