There's no better place than a B&B in which to cozy up by the fireside with a hot drink and a loved one. Warm up at some of our favorite fireplaces and fire pits at B&Bs across the U.S., from private hearths beside roomy Jacuzzis to magnificent outdoor fire pits under the stars. With the help of guest judge and senior editor of Outdoor Sports Guide Magazine Melissa McGibbon, we uncovered eight U.S. inns with unparalleled fireplaces and fire pits. Finalists were chosen based on an analysis of traveler reviews, quality of fireplace or fire-pit ambiance, and fireplace amenities.
Churchill Manor, NAPA, CALIFORNIA
The August 2014 Napa earthquake damaged all four chimneys at Churchill Manor, and they had to be removed," says innkeeper Joanna Guidotti. But the inn brought cozy back with the addition of more than a dozen brand-new gas and wood fireplaces. "Now there are 14 beautiful gas fireplaces: one in each of the 10 guests' rooms and four in the downstairs parlors." We recommend throwing on a robe (all rooms are stocked with thick terry cloth bathrobes) and enjoying a glass of local California wine and cheese by the fire on a brisk fall evening.
Brampton Bed and Breakfast Inn, CHESTERTOWN, MARYLAND
Guests rave about the wood-burning in-room fireplaces at this historical Eastern Shore house. Innkeeper Rachel Hanscom tells us, "Each of our 13 rooms has its own fireplace (11 are wood-burning and two are gas), and two of our public spaces have wood-burning fireplaces. We also have a fire pit." The innkeepers at Brampton B&B prepare guestroom hearths daily—stocking them with plenty of firewood—and guests are welcome to roast homemade marshmallows by the inn's outdoor fire pit.
Oak Hill on Love Lane, WAYNESVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA
"There is a concrete staircase that leads down to what was the original front drive of the house; that area was overgrown and blocked the amazing view of the mountains from the house," says Oak Hill on Love Lane innkeeper Darlene Blankenship. "We had the area excavated and had a beautiful flagstone terrace with a fire pit built, using stone from the mountains that the view looks out to. As a part of the project, we also added a water wheel that overlooks the fire pit terrace. On one side of the fire pit are amazing Smoky Mountain views, and on the other side is the huge water feature with our beautiful historical home in the background. We are very pleased with the end result, and it will be a wonderful new area for our guests to enjoy! "
Hilltop Manor Bed and Breakfast, HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS
"We have four original floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces that are more than 100 years old," says innkeeper Jennifer DeMott. "The stone is Arkansas river rock and [the fireplaces] have all been converted to gas and are open for the guests to use at any time. One is in our main common area and the other three are in our deluxe suites. The common-area fireplace is the backdrop for our indoor breakfast dining (and it's where all of our indoor weddings take place). It is also a popular area for reading a book in the cooler months and/or enjoying a glass of wine. The guests enjoy the in-suite fireplaces as they provide a cozy, romantic atmosphere to their suite."
Crisanver House, SHREWSBURY, VERMONT
You'll find a beautiful outdoor fire pit encircled by Adirondack chairs on Crisanver House's 120 acres of emerald tree-covered hills. Enjoy views of the Green Mountains as you relax by the crackling fire with a fresh scone and a hot cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Additionally, most of the rooms here have fireplaces, and hearths are lit daily in the inn's common areas during the colder months of the year.
Lodge at Moosehead Lake, GREENVILLE, MAINE
Have breakfast by the fire pit with views of Moosehead Lake and—if you're visiting in autumn—the fiery foliage of the nearby North Woods. Spend the night cooking s'mores (ingredients are provided) under a sky full of stars. On occasion, the chef will even prepare dinner at the fire pit—think clam chowder stewed over the flames. We certainly adore the Lodge Moosehead Lake's outdoor fire pit, but the property's cozy in-room gas fireplaces (there's one in every room) aren't too shabby either.
Hampton Terrace B&B, LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS
Enjoy fireside seating beside a grand Georgian-era fireplace in an elegant room decorated with antique furniture at Hampton Terrace B&B. You'll also find a museum-worthy 1920s-era Steinway piano in the parlor at this historical Berkshires inn. Enjoy a complimentary cordial as you sink into a beautiful couch and relax by the fire. Additionally, most guest rooms have gas fireplaces that are operated via remote control.
Field Guide, STOWE, VERMONT
"Field Guide has a huge wood fire pit adjacent to its onsite restaurant, Picnic Social," says Lark Hotels representative Amanda Flanagan Wallace. "It's an enormous fire pit made of giant stones from the property and is surrounded by long half-logs of wood handmade into seats by a local artisan. Guests of the restaurant or hotel love to sit around the fire with a cocktail or shareable snacks from the restaurant in any season. It's accessible by the four-season covered deck at Picnic Social and is surrounded by woods at the back of our property."
