"We are just back from an incredible trip to Sri Lanka and a highlight was definitely our stay at the Old Clove House. We were two families staying together with three children each and the house suited us perfectly. Tai, the owner and host, does his utmost to make it a 5 star experience. His staff is lovely, seemingly working around the clock to meet all our needs. Tai has done an incredible restoration to make a tastefully designed yet incredibly comfortable home away from home. The children loved running around the spacious grounds in the day time and swimming in the pool. We all loved the outdoor dining area where we ate some of the freshest most delicious food per all our specifications. The beaches are nearby with the pretty, family friendly Wijaya Beach (enclosed beach and terrific restaurant with woodfire pizzas) a mere 5 minute tuk tuk ride away. Galle Fort is maybe 15 minutes away. We absolutely adored our 4 days and nights at Old Clove House and only wish we could have stayed longer!"

  • Cool, clean, comfortable, charming.

"This extremely aptly named cool retreat is comfortable and elegantly furnished, and we were very well looked after all week by Kingsley and his team, who cooked excellent Sri Lankan dinners for us every night (and showed me how to make the delicious aubergine dish). Kingsley was also very helpful in suggesting day and half day outings and booking a driver for us. We enjoyed cocktails on the terrace and cooling off in the pool, and we both had a marvellously relaxing hour-long massage at the house. !n September, just pre-monsoon season, the sea was too rough to swim in from the beach opposite the villa, however our walks along the picture postcard beach were perfect, and the sunsets spectacular. We saw nothing to suggest a need for a 24 hour security guard on the property but were nevertheless reassured by his presence. The charm, comfort and coolness within are a contrast to the bustle, obvious poverty and general untidiness without, but it is also only 12 years since the tsunami hit many parts of this coastline. On the Galle road there is a tsunami museum and a brutally graphic memorial to the many hundreds who died here. We enjoyed our visit to Galle, which is more touristy than the busy, teeming Ambalangoda, and has some more upmarket shops. We did a long day trip to the Udawalawe national park and enjoyed the safari experience although it would have been better to go earlier or later in the day for an opportunity to see the elephant herd. Kingsley will take you in the tuk-tuk to the river just 15 minutes away for a lovely 2 hour boat trip, mangroves and all, not forgetting the obligatory trip to the Buddhist temple on one of the islands. We ate lunch in randomly chosen roadside restaurants on two occasions, sticking to vegetable curries, which were very good. On your outings try to have handy a collection of 100 and 200 (50p and £1) rupee notes for tips; these are small sums but make a difference to guides, waiters and drivers. Whether you just chill out at the villa, or use it as a base for sight-seeing trips, Samudrawasa is a wonderful place to stay. I felt real regret on leaving it, and Sri Lanka."

  • Beautiful peaceful garden setting

"We enjoyed the fabulous gardens of the villa which were a lovely haven to return to after being out and about in the crazy SriLankan traffic. The owner, Chris was very friendly and helpful, arranging trips for a river cruise, a visit to a tea plantation , a turtle sanctuary and ( the highlight of the holiday) a ride on the local temple elephant which we would have missed if Chris had not been on the case. The staff were attentive and the breakfasts were particularly good. Man versus Sri Lankan breakfast was a regular sight ( my husband ) though the rest of our party settled for fabulous platters of exotic fruit. All the staff were friendly, but Shan in particular was very attentive, bringing pots of tea before we even asked for them ! The chef took great care to accommodate my food allergies. We did not want to leave !"

  • Best locationh

"First of all thanks to Mr. Prianga for all his efforts to make our stay enjoyable. Most of all we liked that there was space and light also quiet enough. Combined with location, next to premium services starting from the lobby and friendly staff. Though there was separate aironditioning in each room, we kept windows open all the day for fresh air. Somehow the carpeted floors causes leeking nose and itching eyes. Reading lights could have been brighter beside the bed an we considered electriccity quite expensive, more than 30 dollars for four nights, especially that we even didn't cook at all."
