Destination guide

One night in Bangkok and the world's your oyster

A vibrant, tropical metropolis, Bangkok is a full-on assault on the senses. Perched on the Chao Phraya River, a Bangkok vacation rental makes a great base for your next Southeast Asian adventure. The city is crammed with world-renowned temples, like the glittering Grand Palace, the gold-laced Wat Arun, and Wat Pho, home of the reclining Buddha. Visit the lively floating market or take a tuk-tuk to the famous Khao San Road. Kids and grownups alike will love exploring Siam Ocean World, a huge aquarium. And with some of the world's best street food on offer, you certainly won't go hungry in Bangkok.

Things to do

All that glitters IS gold in Bangkok's Golden Triangle

The dazzling Grand Palace has been the official royal residence since 1782. This vast royal complex has many temples, including Wat Pra Kaew, the temple of the emerald Buddha. Don't forget to cover up when you visit, as the palace and temples have a strict dress code. Another popular sight is Wat Pho, home to the reclining Buddha, a 150-foot-long gold statue. It also has a school where you can take classes in Thai massage. The third in Bangkok's golden triangle of sights is the glittering Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn, a gold structure on the Chao Phraya River.

Activities

Don't mess with my tuk-tuk; see the best of Bangkok

Many people's first introduction to Thailand starts in the capital. Book a Bangkok vacation rental in one of the central districts like Sukhumvit or Silom to make sure that you'll get a real taste of the city, no matter how brief your stay is. Take a tuk-tuk tour around the main temples, or venture down to the banks of the Chao Phraya River to visit one of the city's colorful floating markets. After dark the city comes alive with heavily scented street food stalls, night markets, and hundreds of neon-lit bars around Sukhumvit Soi.

Weather

Sun and showers? It's monsoon mayhem in the Thai capital

Despite its tropical monsoon climate, Bangkok is a year-round destination. For the best weather, visit between November and March, the dry season, when temperatures are a manageable 70 to 80 degrees. It's also the busiest time and Bangkok vacation rentals can get booked up far in advance. Low season is between May and October, when the monsoon rains fall. Although frequent, these are usually brief and dry up quickly in the warm climate, so don't let that put you off. December and February are the coolest months, when temperatures drop to around 60 degrees.

Natural features

Khao Yai National Park: Where wild elephants roam

Perched on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, Bangkok is in the south of the country, close to the Gulf of Thailand. While the city has many beautiful parks to explore, you need to venture out a little to get close to nature. The Khao Yai National Park is around 3 hours' drive from the city, but the journey is worth the chance to spot the wild elephants which roam the park. Book a guided trekking trip through the jungle or try the Kong Kaeow nature trail which leads from the visitors' center.
