  • Lovely old home rich with decor

"This lovely turn of the century home was the perfect setting for our "maritime" family reunion. There was ample room for all 13 of us including beds, bathrooms and sitting/living room space. The house has been beautifully refinished on the inside. No small task considering the size of the home. We would actually make wrong turns trying to find our way around the house. The house is walking distance to all amenities and the downtown core which offered many nice shops suitable for different ages (from crafts and clothing to comics and video games). I am only rating 4 out of 5 stars because, like all older homes, there was some (inevitable) wear and tear on the exterior of the building that made leisure time outside less enjoyable then the interior. Overall a wonderful experience...too bad it is so far away from the rest of Canada, otherwise we would come back sooner."

  • Perfect escape

"My mother, husband and I recently stayed at the Castle on the Rocks cottage (July 2016). We love the slow pace of Manitoulin and the cottage was a perfect fit for our trip. The smaller cottage is set apart from the other cottages on the private laneway so it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere, but you can easily walk in to town if you want to take a night off from cooking, grab a beer on a patio, or visit the marina. We prepared meals in the well stocked kitchen but also enjoyed the local restaurants for dinner during our stay. The cottage itself is a real gem. It seemed to the be the older of the two buildings but was a truly authentic cottage, complete with a beautiful stone fireplace and lovely family heirlooms. It was very evident that it was a well-loved property where many happy family memories were created. We stayed during a heat wave but the breeze coming of Lake Huron kept us nice and cool at night. Swimming in front of the cottage (with water shoes) was beautiful and very refreshing. If you want calm, warm water you may want to stay on one of the lakes on the interior of the island, but we loved the sounds of the waves, the fresh air, and the dramatic landscape of the coast. From the cottage property you can access some beautiful trails with intricate cedar carvings (benches, boardwalks and totems), or drive ~30min to the famous Cup-and-Saucer tail just north of M'Chigeeng. We spent most of our time relaxing in the shade of the umbrella reading a book, or exploring the nooks and crannies of the flower-studded shoreline. This was exactly the recharge that we needed, with the convenience of being a few minutes from the ferry dock and South Baymouth. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and we would definitely visit again."
