  • Quiet cottage in a grand landscape

"This is a newly finished cottage, nestled among trees in the corner of a large field that slopes down towards the shore. There are lots of windows to let the cross breezes flow through. You're surrounded by trees, and from the deck you can look down through the woods to a brook. Even after the severe drought this year, there was still some water in the brook. It must really babble in the spring. There is a distant ocean view too, and you'll want to walk down the field to the private shoreline to experience it directly. It really does feel like a retreat from the world. Many Nova Scotians are not familiar with the "Noel Shore", despite its proximity to Halifax, the Annapolis Valley and Truro. I live on the beautiful South Shore, but I'm captivated by the landscape of the Noel Shore with its rolling hills and deep clay soil that grows big trees. The water is very different too, a gentler inland sea with huge tides. When the tide is out, you can walk forever on a Mars-like landscape that reveals itself twice a day. When the tide comes in at the end of a sunny day, the sand warms the water and it can make for nice swimming. The kitchen is well-equipped; we cooked full meals there for the 3 of us. Buy your groceries before you get here; there is limited selection locally. There are excellent restaurants about a half-hour drive east and west, and good pizza to the south. If you need internet, talk to the owners. If you're a heavy user and don't have a good data plan, the turbo hub is quite expensive. It's not for online gamers or watching movies, and there are other precautions to take (e.g. turning off automatic updates and photo synching from your phone) so you don't get a surprise. This is a great base for exploring other parts of Nova Scotia, but plan to spend some time right there too, exploring the shore and relaxing among the trees."

  • The Perfect Holiday

"Our holiday in Nova Scotia left us with one overriding feeling -- that we want to return next year. The house was in a spectacular location overlooking the Bay of Fundy, giving us wonderful views and the most amazing sunsets. The house was a home from home, with all sorts of expected and unexpected comforts and pleasures. Our host, Marion was incredibly welcoming, and a fount of knowledge on the local area. The area itself"

  • Great place to stay

"I have used VRBO to rent a number of different apartments in a wide variety of places, and this place is one of my all time favorites. The apartment is exactly as described and pictured. Lots of room, nicely furnished, and immaculately clean. The location could not be better. Plenty of parking, which is great because you can walk everywhere. Very quiet, even though you are above a pizza parlor. (The pizza, and the people that work there are great). The owner provided plenty of details, and responded very quickly to any questions. If you are there in the summer, be sure to attend the Baddeck Gathering Ceilidh for great Cape Breton Gaelic music. There is a friendly tourist information office across the parking lot, and numerous shops and restaurants starting next door to a five minute walk away. We used this as a base for driving and hiking along the Cabot Trail, visiting places along the Ceilidh Trail, and the Cape Breton Miners Museum in Glace Bay and the Fortress of Louisbourg. I will definitely stay there the next time in Cape Breton."
