  • Awesome, modern, secluded beach house

"This place was the perfect getaway for a family of four who wanted a quiet, secluded place to stay with a beach and coral reef right out the back door. The spacious house is quite modern with air conditioning, electricity, and hot water. There is a large master bedroom with a king size bed, and two smaller bedrooms with queen size beds. There are two large bathrooms, and a washing machine. The furniture is new and is in great condition, and the kitchen is equipped with everything one needs. There are three inflatable rafts for fun in the water, four sets of snorkeling gear (we brought our own though) and a single person sit-on-top kayak and paddle. The back porch is where we spent most of our time relaxing and watching the ocean. The little bay (Cutlass Bay) is fairly well protected but the ocean was still pretty rough (whitecaps) and, at least for the week of June 25-July 2 2016, too rough for kids' first snorkeling experience as they kept getting water in the snorkels. But the more experienced adult snorkeler among us went out every day, twice a day. The visibility was fair to excellent - worse in the afternoon when the surface water heats up and the phytoplankton get thick and turn the water green - but further out from the bay the visibility was consistently good to excellent. There is little boat traffic within the bay so no need for a dive flag. There are large swaths of dead coral, and the coral bleaching is pretty bad where the coral is very shallow, but there is new coral growing, including brain coral, staghorn coral, lots of sea fans and gorgonians, lots of sponges, and while there were few large schools of fish, the diversity was good - we identified over 60 species of fish in our short week there, plus there were many sea turtles although most were too shy to let a snorkeler approach. Interestingly and unfortunately, no moray eels. We drove to Greenwood Resort for lunch one day but discovered they weren't serving, so we drove to Fernandez Bay Resort twice - they have outstanding food and a self-serve bar that is on the honor system - but they are pretty expensive. Lunch for four cost $80 one day and $120 another day. The bay there is on the leeward side of the island and the water was calm enough for the kids to snorkel and swim safely. Issy and Yvonne were great and got us a car rental for much cheaper than one could get anywhere else. Groceries for four people ran around $300 for the week, including wine and beer."

  • Piece of Paradise

"We spent two adventure-filled weeks at the Hideaway with two families 4 adults and 4 children ages 11-17. The house is on an amazing secluded piece of coastline and upon arrival you immediately sense how special it is. The house was as described and everything worked well . The owner was very helpful in advance of our trip, helping with logistics and questions. One of our main reasons for choosing this house was to have close proximity to good reefs for snorkeling. The snorkeling in front of the house was as good as anything we found along the south shore of Cat Island, we regularly spotted eagle rays, large barracudas, turtles, various reef fish and had observations of a nurse and reef shark. The house provided a great base for exploring the rest of the island too which has dozens of isolated and interesting places to visit. The house is probably most suitable for 4-6 people in terms of sleeping and eating, but if you are good with air mattresses and not eating all together than it works for 8 just fine. The doors of the house were challenging to lock and the windows had severe condensation between the panes which is part of the reality of ocean front house maintenance in a remote Bahamian location. The house and Cat Island is probably best suited for those in search of a travel experience as a vacation and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for something off the beaten track. Hope to return again one day."

  • Romantic Getaway in a stunning setting

"My Husband and I heard about this though a friend who told us we would not be disappointed, and she was absolutely right!!!!!! Upon arrival were were overcome with the stunning scenery, unspoiled white beaches, sapphire blue oceans. And then we arrived at the house, a charming bungalow set in a private cove with its own beach, palm trees holding a rather magnificent reign as they swayed gently in the warm breeze. And the night sky with an amazing display of stars that we could not take our eyes off, was a perfect backdrop for a bonfire on the beach... The fresh seafood was also amazing, we didn't know lobsters could be that big, almost 3 feet long with freshly caught grouper were supplied by the caretaker/fisherman Reynold.."

  • Both the property itself and the owners themselves were terrific.

"The other reviewers were spot on in raving about the Tilmans' Port Howe home and in describing the owners as being exceedingly thoughtful and accommodating. Literally I could not have asked for more. Of note was the Tillman's willingness to take a guest such as myself with them to various social events so that one could meet many of the locals. Introductions were made and one felt at home very quickly . This was a great way to get a feel for the community. Another point to be made is that Bob is a very accomplished waterman - so if your interests are either diving or fishing there probably is no better place to be and no one better to be with. ! Lastly, Bob will help you arrange to get a rental car at a reasonable rate and that is a big plus."
