  • Beautiful resort in a great location

"We stayed in a 3 bedroom for two weeks and then moved to another 3 bedroom for week three. Both units are similar in layout however the second one was nicer, more updated, and more privacy bedroom wise. Everything was as advertised. Loved the property and location. Downfall was all of the stairs and no restroom at the pool/beach area. Another note if you need to run the A/C the main level bedroom would hear it. It did not affect us but might bother others. Fell in love with the island and we are currently looking for property to buy. Would highly recommend a visit to the island in paradise."

  • Excellent place to stay on Ambergris Caye

"After reading all of the excellent reviews I chose Athens Gate as the place to stay for our first trip to Belize. Man was that a good call! My wife and I along with another couple stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit on the 4th floor. No elevator, but the stairs were a good work out. The units are right on the beach, with large living and dining areas and a large master suite. The second bedroom was quite small, but adequate for our group. The lanai overlooking the pool and Caribbean was huge. The staff was very friendly and took care of everything we needed. Special thanks to E for setting up our snorkeling trip (on the Lady Leslie catamaran - a must do excursion if you go to Ambergris Caye) , arranging a golf car rental and cabs for us, and for turning us on to Sushi night at the Blue Water Grill on the beach in San Pedro. Soto, the bar tender (and personal chef) provided the best service ever, especially the lobster, fish and vegetable dinner grilled to perfection. Setting up the reservation and all transfers required to get to Athens Gate was a breeze thanks to Lori. She took care of all the details for us. We took a snorkeling trip with Lady Leslie Tours to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve at the Reef, Shark and Sting Ray Alley and Caye Caulker. Martin Leslie and his sons are excellent hosts, and snorkeling guides. Best boat ride ever and I will do this trip every time I come back to Belize. The restaurant across the street from Athens Gate has good food and you have to try the lobster fajitas. There is a small market a couple of blocks away and larger grocery stores on the south side of San Pedro. I would definitely stay at Athens Gate again and recommend it to friends and family."

  • Great Vacation!

"We just returned from a great stay at Casa Amarillo. We were a family of 11 with 6 adults, 3 teenagers and 2 tweens. We loved it! We rented the entire house and loved the privacy and beauty of the surroundings. We arrived a week after a hurricane hit the island and we were shocked at how well they had cleaned everything and had the house and grounds ready for our group. We rented 3 golf carts for trips into town at Carts Belize and we enjoyed having them. It is a rough bumpy ride to and from town but we just looked at it as an adventure and laughed along the way. Would HIGHLY recommend bug spray for the journey and at night around the house. We had meals cooked for us twice while we stayed. Both meals were wonderful. We had a traditional Belizean meal when we arrived after traveling all day cooked by Robert's sister because Marfa was ill. Marfa also cooked chicken fajitas for us one night after an all day excursion. We LOVED her salsa and guacamole and could have eaten it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. Robert was great and helped fixed the volleyball net, kept the pool and grounds clean, and arranged for Carts Belize to fix a flat tire we had on one of the golf carts. The house is very comfortable but do not expect a 5 star hotel. There are air conditioners in each bedroom which helps at night when you sleep. The beds are ok but not luxurious. We would have enjoyed a few more towels and beach towels for our party size but we made do. Kitchen was well stocked with plates, cups, utensils, etc.. Wifi worked great indoors and outside and we enjoyed the TV's in the evening so we could watch the Olympics. We enjoyed playing volleyball, sand hockey and relaxing in the pool or hammocks. Rosa was awesome too. She met us right on time at the airport and helped answer many questions we had. She provided a phone for us to use and was a phone call away if we needed her. She made great recommendations regarding tours and excursions. She gave us a book that had many recommendations from local companies and other guests regarding tours, restaurants and also included a history of Belize. Very helpful. Rosa also helped arrange our trip to the mainland for Cave Tubing and Zip-lining. Suya Tours picked us up at our dock for a great morning of snorkeling at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley and the Coral Gardens. The rest of the time we stayed around the house having fun as a family. We loved out time at Casa Amarillo and would stay again!"

  • Returning to 'normal' was so hard after the "Sandcastle"

"I read the reviews thoroughly before finally deciding on this place,. It took us 12 hours to get there, but upon rounding the corner and seeing the first view of the pier and ocean, and then coming in to find not one but TWO gift baskets from Carolyn (one for the second arrivals in our group who would arrive the next day and stay downstairs), we knew we'd chosen the best. The main family room upstairs has high ceilings, is airy and opens onto the balcony...the beach activities from the rental hut made everything special, as we kayaked to the reef almost daily to snorkel, and my personal favorite was the stand up paddle board, which I used to cruise around the docks in our area. And as so many people have said, William the caretaker rocks! He felt like family, but more importantly, he taught my 3 boys (one with special needs, 15, one just turned 18 and one 21) about making the most out of nature. He showed them spear fishing and how to catch fish (as he does daily) with a coke bottle wrapped with twine -- something endlessly fascinating to my husband who always goes. He also does wood carvings! We brought home a stunning sting ray and hammerhead shark sculpture, and coasters he signed for us. He also gave us his coconut demonstration -- how to break one open if you had to survive..and his key lime juice demonstration. Local honey, local brown sugar, key limes....YUM! Marvin, his friend, also helps out and we loved the dogs so much we brought them in to watch tv with us a couple of nights. :) Here's a YouTube video of the coconut demonstration, done inside the tiki hut bar in the yard: https://youtu.be/8spq4qqKhKw SIDE TRIPS: At Carolyn's recommendation, we used Seaduced for the Caye Caulker Day Sail ($100 per person, day trip) to go to Hol Chan, Shark & Ray Alley, and Caye Caulker. The guides were charming and knowledgeable and the infamous rum punch made for a very social group. We made sure to pick a day when cruise ships weren't in port. We used Caribbean Adventures to visit Altun Ha (we had the whole place to ourselves)and Cave Tubing in one day -- Cave Tubing was amazing. And...definitely call Aurora! She came to the house and made a grilled lobster/ribs feast that was less costly than any of the local restaurants. Mamba was our favorite, Rojo's was good: but fair warning - they are EXPENSIVE, as are all groceries. Tip: Using cash will save you 12.5% on tours. This was a special house, lots of wonderful memories."
