  • Returning to 'normal' was so hard after the "Sandcastle"

"I read the reviews thoroughly before finally deciding on this place,. It took us 12 hours to get there, but upon rounding the corner and seeing the first view of the pier and ocean, and then coming in to find not one but TWO gift baskets from Carolyn (one for the second arrivals in our group who would arrive the next day and stay downstairs), we knew we'd chosen the best. The main family room upstairs has high ceilings, is airy and opens onto the balcony...the beach activities from the rental hut made everything special, as we kayaked to the reef almost daily to snorkel, and my personal favorite was the stand up paddle board, which I used to cruise around the docks in our area. And as so many people have said, William the caretaker rocks! He felt like family, but more importantly, he taught my 3 boys (one with special needs, 15, one just turned 18 and one 21) about making the most out of nature. He showed them spear fishing and how to catch fish (as he does daily) with a coke bottle wrapped with twine -- something endlessly fascinating to my husband who always goes. He also does wood carvings! We brought home a stunning sting ray and hammerhead shark sculpture, and coasters he signed for us. He also gave us his coconut demonstration -- how to break one open if you had to survive..and his key lime juice demonstration. Local honey, local brown sugar, key limes....YUM! Marvin, his friend, also helps out and we loved the dogs so much we brought them in to watch tv with us a couple of nights. :) Here's a YouTube video of the coconut demonstration, done inside the tiki hut bar in the yard: https://youtu.be/8spq4qqKhKw SIDE TRIPS: At Carolyn's recommendation, we used Seaduced for the Caye Caulker Day Sail ($100 per person, day trip) to go to Hol Chan, Shark & Ray Alley, and Caye Caulker. The guides were charming and knowledgeable and the infamous rum punch made for a very social group. We made sure to pick a day when cruise ships weren't in port. We used Caribbean Adventures to visit Altun Ha (we had the whole place to ourselves)and Cave Tubing in one day -- Cave Tubing was amazing. And...definitely call Aurora! She came to the house and made a grilled lobster/ribs feast that was less costly than any of the local restaurants. Mamba was our favorite, Rojo's was good: but fair warning - they are EXPENSIVE, as are all groceries. Tip: Using cash will save you 12.5% on tours. This was a special house, lots of wonderful memories."

  • Relaxing Stay at Sunset Beach Resort

"I, along with three other friends, recent returned from a great trip to Belize, where we spent part of our time in this condo. The description of the listing was very accurate and the condo fit our needs perfectly. It is in a great location... close enough to easily head into town for dinner or shopping, but far enough away from the activity to be quiet and feel secluded. There are several restaurants and bars within easy walking distance to the resort -- we visited a couple (Island Time, Lone Star, and Nest Grill) during our stay. Chapin does a great job keeping the resort grounds clean and he's available to help with an issues (not that we had any). The pool was great and we never had any issue getting lounge chairs -- admittedly, only about a third of the units were occupied during our stay. The unit is well stocked with plenty of pots, pans, utensils, cups, ice trays, etc. There is even a cabinet with a few beach items, sunscreen, etc. from previous visitors. We loved eating on the private balcony with the gorgeous view and a wonderful breeze. There is also a hammock and several other chairs. We made a couple breakfasts in the unit using eggs and hand-made tortillas from the small market down the street. We also grilled on the BBQ one night. We ended up only doing one snorkeling trip, but it was great. A private tour where they picked us up right from the dock at the resort. We stopped at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and Coral Gardens, before heading on to Caye Caulker for lunch and time to walk around. The trip was a blast. Since we were there at the end of the dry season, we didn't see many mosquitoes. In fact, rarely used any bug spray and had no bites. We rented a golf cart (highly recommended) which provided us with flexibility to move around the island and we found it a fun way to travel. Note that it can be a bit bumpy for people on the back of the cart. Overall it was a fantastic trip. The other people staying at the resort during our time there were really nice and the atmosphere at the resort is relaxed and friendly. I look forward to visiting Belize again and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again."

  • Exciting stay!

"I say we had an exciting stay as we rode out Hurricane Earl with the owners during our stay. We were well prepared for the power outage for a few days and mopping up the water was not a huge deal. Unfortunately, the pier and palapa were destroyed. The owners and caretakers were out cleaning up everything immediately. Being long-time Alaskans, we were immune to a power outage and high winds. However, I would not have stayed for anything stronger than a category 1 storm. The condo was minimally appointed, but comfortable. The pool was small but perfect for our 8-year old and nice for a quick dip. My only suggestions would be to outfit the kitchen and the terrace better. There were very few plastic cups and plates, with limited utensils for food prep. A couple of wine glasses would be handy. We prefer to cook, rather than eat out all the time. I also would love a hammock or lounge chairs on the terrace for comfortable gazing at the sea! I truly hope the area has recovered from the storm. Many of the bars, palapas and docks were destroyed. We will be back!"

  • Family Vacation

"The reviews do not do this villa and it's location justice. We can try but to get the full effect you simply have to visit! The caretakers are two of the most wonderful people you'll meet in a lifetime, the amenities are out of this world, the proximity to everything is great, .and the raw beauty of the island is indescribable. How could we describe sitting on the top deck with zillions of stars when there were dozens of shooting stars each night? How can we describe a sunset with colors we've never seen before? And how can we describe the sunrises reflecting off the water like a rare gem stone? Give yourself and your family a priceless gift and visit Stella di Mare. It will be a memory you'll share for the rest of your life!"
