Ideal place for some intense R&R
"Stayed at Heron's Rest for two weeks over Christmas and the New Year. We were looking for a place to seriously relax and recover from a difficult year. We were not disappointed. Our ground floor apartment was just as described by Diana on the VRBO website. It was simply but comfortably furnished, and had everything one might require.
The two main rooms were spacious and airy, both with ceiling fans, which we used, and the bedroom had an A/C unit which we did not. Comfortable bed and our bed-linen was changed twice while we were there. Living room had a very comfortable sofa and a well-equipped kitchen area. No stove-top, but there was a double hotplate if needed. Microwave, decent-size refrigerator, coffee maker etc. We needed nothing else. There was a TV, but we didn't use it, so don't know what entertainment it provided. Good wi-fi service, which of course is indispensable these days, even on R&R.
Bathroom was small, but the walk-in shower had plenty of hot water at all times. Toilet paper etc. put in the waste basket, but that's normal without regular sewage systems.
We spent a lot of time relaxing on our little patio, or in one of the two good quality hammocks - a great place to watch and listen to all the varied bird life.
Diana was a wonderful host. She picked us up from the San Pedro airport after a journey with many delays, and also took us back for our return journey as she was going to town anyway. She recommended places to eat and drink in the neighbourhood, and made reservations for a snorkeling trip, as well as a wonderful all-day visit to the Mayan ruins of Lamenai. And it was little things like giving me a battery for my toothbrush and making sure we knew in advance when the maid was coming that really made a difference.
Some general Ambergris thoughts - most people rent a golf cart for some or all of their stay. We decided not to, and rarely ventured more than a mile or so away from "home". We thought about bicycles, but the only ones available are usually coasters (no hand brakes), and we didn't want that much excitement. Depending on the time of the year, you will experience mosquitoes or sand flies - a couple of sprays of OFF! should do the trick, but be prepared. Aqbol Yoga resort is just over the road and a good place for breakfast or lunch, and there are several other good eating places within walking distance.
We achieved our relaxation goal and didn't even mind returning to a snowbound Colorado."
