  • Beautiful, Fun, Unique Introduction to Belize

    Rob F.

"We were here in January (which, oddly, is not considered "high season," since the weather was absolutely gorgeous the entire time). Our hosts and staff were very friendly and welcoming. The views from Casa del Mar are stunning, as is the night sky. The little house is well appointed and the shower/bathroom situation is like camping (no big deal). This place is quiet, private and remote. I recommend stocking up on basic provisions (coffee, snacks, fruit) at one of the markets in San Pedro before heading up to Casa del Mar. That said, the Chat-N-Chill restaurant will accommodate you for any meal with a little notice. (There are restaurants at the resorts along the way, but they're on the pricey side.) Do not forget the insect repellent! Several afternoons there was a lull in the breeze which brought out the mosquitoes and no-see-ums, but they were generally kept at bay with the air flow in the cabin. This was our first trip to Belize and, based on our experience here, we would certainly go back. People were genuinely friendly and helpful. If you are looking for something other than a typical resort/hotel experience, but way more comfortable than actual camping, we highly recommend Casa del Mar."

  • Ideal place for some intense R&R

    Sheila C.

"Stayed at Heron's Rest for two weeks over Christmas and the New Year. We were looking for a place to seriously relax and recover from a difficult year. We were not disappointed. Our ground floor apartment was just as described by Diana on the VRBO website. It was simply but comfortably furnished, and had everything one might require. The two main rooms were spacious and airy, both with ceiling fans, which we used, and the bedroom had an A/C unit which we did not. Comfortable bed and our bed-linen was changed twice while we were there. Living room had a very comfortable sofa and a well-equipped kitchen area. No stove-top, but there was a double hotplate if needed. Microwave, decent-size refrigerator, coffee maker etc. We needed nothing else. There was a TV, but we didn't use it, so don't know what entertainment it provided. Good wi-fi service, which of course is indispensable these days, even on R&R. Bathroom was small, but the walk-in shower had plenty of hot water at all times. Toilet paper etc. put in the waste basket, but that's normal without regular sewage systems. We spent a lot of time relaxing on our little patio, or in one of the two good quality hammocks - a great place to watch and listen to all the varied bird life. Diana was a wonderful host. She picked us up from the San Pedro airport after a journey with many delays, and also took us back for our return journey as she was going to town anyway. She recommended places to eat and drink in the neighbourhood, and made reservations for a snorkeling trip, as well as a wonderful all-day visit to the Mayan ruins of Lamenai. And it was little things like giving me a battery for my toothbrush and making sure we knew in advance when the maid was coming that really made a difference. Some general Ambergris thoughts - most people rent a golf cart for some or all of their stay. We decided not to, and rarely ventured more than a mile or so away from "home". We thought about bicycles, but the only ones available are usually coasters (no hand brakes), and we didn't want that much excitement. Depending on the time of the year, you will experience mosquitoes or sand flies - a couple of sprays of OFF! should do the trick, but be prepared. Aqbol Yoga resort is just over the road and a good place for breakfast or lunch, and there are several other good eating places within walking distance. We achieved our relaxation goal and didn't even mind returning to a snowbound Colorado."

  • INCREDIBLE CARIBBEAN TRANQUILITY

    Mimi R.

"I just returned home from a 7 night stay at this property and I must say that of all my travels in the Caribbean, this home was by far the best place I have every stayed! The house was set up beautifully and decorated in a wonderful cheerful whimsical style. The tranquility was astounding, the water breathtaking, and the long pier with the palapa at the end was my very favorite spot on the property. It is a bit farther out of San Pedro than I had anticipated, and it required renting a golf cart to get around (which ended up being super fun). But the distance from town was also a blessing in that it felt really safe and it was very quiet. I would rent this house again and would recommend it highly!"
