  • Excellent place to stay on Ambergris Caye

"After reading all of the excellent reviews I chose Athens Gate as the place to stay for our first trip to Belize. Man was that a good call! My wife and I along with another couple stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit on the 4th floor. No elevator, but the stairs were a good work out. The units are right on the beach, with large living and dining areas and a large master suite. The second bedroom was quite small, but adequate for our group. The lanai overlooking the pool and Caribbean was huge. The staff was very friendly and took care of everything we needed. Special thanks to E for setting up our snorkeling trip (on the Lady Leslie catamaran - a must do excursion if you go to Ambergris Caye) , arranging a golf car rental and cabs for us, and for turning us on to Sushi night at the Blue Water Grill on the beach in San Pedro. Soto, the bar tender (and personal chef) provided the best service ever, especially the lobster, fish and vegetable dinner grilled to perfection. Setting up the reservation and all transfers required to get to Athens Gate was a breeze thanks to Lori. She took care of all the details for us. We took a snorkeling trip with Lady Leslie Tours to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve at the Reef, Shark and Sting Ray Alley and Caye Caulker. Martin Leslie and his sons are excellent hosts, and snorkeling guides. Best boat ride ever and I will do this trip every time I come back to Belize. The restaurant across the street from Athens Gate has good food and you have to try the lobster fajitas. There is a small market a couple of blocks away and larger grocery stores on the south side of San Pedro. I would definitely stay at Athens Gate again and recommend it to friends and family."

  • Relaxing Stay at Sunset Beach Resort

"I, along with three other friends, recent returned from a great trip to Belize, where we spent part of our time in this condo. The description of the listing was very accurate and the condo fit our needs perfectly. It is in a great location... close enough to easily head into town for dinner or shopping, but far enough away from the activity to be quiet and feel secluded. There are several restaurants and bars within easy walking distance to the resort -- we visited a couple (Island Time, Lone Star, and Nest Grill) during our stay. Chapin does a great job keeping the resort grounds clean and he's available to help with an issues (not that we had any). The pool was great and we never had any issue getting lounge chairs -- admittedly, only about a third of the units were occupied during our stay. The unit is well stocked with plenty of pots, pans, utensils, cups, ice trays, etc. There is even a cabinet with a few beach items, sunscreen, etc. from previous visitors. We loved eating on the private balcony with the gorgeous view and a wonderful breeze. There is also a hammock and several other chairs. We made a couple breakfasts in the unit using eggs and hand-made tortillas from the small market down the street. We also grilled on the BBQ one night. We ended up only doing one snorkeling trip, but it was great. A private tour where they picked us up right from the dock at the resort. We stopped at Hol Chan, Shark Ray Alley, and Coral Gardens, before heading on to Caye Caulker for lunch and time to walk around. The trip was a blast. Since we were there at the end of the dry season, we didn't see many mosquitoes. In fact, rarely used any bug spray and had no bites. We rented a golf cart (highly recommended) which provided us with flexibility to move around the island and we found it a fun way to travel. Note that it can be a bit bumpy for people on the back of the cart. Overall it was a fantastic trip. The other people staying at the resort during our time there were really nice and the atmosphere at the resort is relaxed and friendly. I look forward to visiting Belize again and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again."

  • No hassle and stress free vacation

"Our vacation began the minute we walked out of the Belize City airport. The owner(Tony) and care taker(Alfred) of the casa BajaMar recommended our group (10 of us) take the Nautalis water taxi to the home. As promised, they were there waiting for us and loaded up our luggage and got us on the boat and took us directly to the dock where we were met by Alfred and his great dog Po. He immediately made us all feel comfortable and welcome. All of the rooms were very clean, roomy and views to die for. One of my main concerns before we left on the trip was setting up day and night snorkeling trips, but Tony highly recommended we just wait until we arrived and that Alfred would set everything up. I was a bit anxious about that as we were there over the Christmas holidays and I feared everything would be booked. Well no worries about that as Alfred has connections ha ha. Alfred said "lets just set up these excursions on the best days and when you all feel like it". Fortunately the weather was always fantastic, but he chose the perfect days and we just walked out to the dock when our excursion boat (coral divers) arrived. Alfred literally handled everything. Talk about easy and convenient... wow. Genie (guide and boat driver with Coral Divers) was fun, easy going, knowledgeable and had some tasty rum punch for our adventures. We did several snorkels. Hol Chan/shark ray alley, and Mexico rock(which was our personal favorite) and also a night snorkel to Mexico rock. We also went to Caye Caulker island, walked around and had a fabulous lunch at a restaurant right at the dock we tied up to. After we left Caye Caulker, Genie took us by boat to the other side of the island and we fed the tarpon fish right out of our hands. We all thought that was pretty cool! Life back at the home was as relaxing and beautiful as one could imagine. We had two golf carts(4 and 6 seater) so occasionally went to local store for a few items or a longer drive into San Pedro for a bigger shop. Take cash though as there is a toll (2.50 belizian each way) to enter San Pedro. One of our favorite stops was the "truck stop" (maybe a mile before San Pedro)which had a great bar and ice cream shop! The best advice I can give on this trip though was to have Dianie cook all the supper meals.....amazing cook and more reasonable than local restaurants. But most of all... Trust Alfred to book everything and just enjoy the majestic beauty of this amazing home and relax! Truly a 5 star vacation."

  • Perfect Spot for Family Trip

"We descended on the Blue Dolphin for 8 days at the tail end of the rainy season, hoping to cheat the weather while capitalizing on lower prices and fewer tourists. Our family was comprised of 13, with three generations and the youngest being two nine-month-old babies. A few of us have traveled pretty extensively in Central American and Caribbean countries, and we chose Belize expecting security, beauty, amazing wildlife, and knowing it would be more expensive than most other Central American countries. All of those things turned out to be true, and we had an amazing vacation. Dr. Mark could not have been more inviting and accommodating in the months leading up to our trip, providing details and recommendations, and even connecting me with specific vendors for golf carts, a snorkel sail trip, and a Mayan jungle excursion. Armando and Gloria are the caretakers who live on site and love to help out. They pulled the kayaks out each morning, kept the place immaculate, and saved our behinds when we had a flat tire on the golf cart or locked ourselves out of the house! They provide other services that we did not use because we were out and about so much, but the hospitality is top notch. The house slept 13 easily with a futon to spare. Must dos: golf carts for the week, kayaking (kayaks included), snorkeling at the reef off the beach (lion fish, nurse sharks), catamaran tour, Mayan ruins (recommend not taking small children and pack rain gear), the secret beach, and lots of hanging by the pool. The blender makes great pina colatas. We had a spectacular time. Enjoy!"
