  • Excellent place to stay on Ambergris Caye

"After reading all of the excellent reviews I chose Athens Gate as the place to stay for our first trip to Belize. Man was that a good call! My wife and I along with another couple stayed in a 2 bedroom/2 bath unit on the 4th floor. No elevator, but the stairs were a good work out. The units are right on the beach, with large living and dining areas and a large master suite. The second bedroom was quite small, but adequate for our group. The lanai overlooking the pool and Caribbean was huge. The staff was very friendly and took care of everything we needed. Special thanks to E for setting up our snorkeling trip (on the Lady Leslie catamaran - a must do excursion if you go to Ambergris Caye) , arranging a golf car rental and cabs for us, and for turning us on to Sushi night at the Blue Water Grill on the beach in San Pedro. Soto, the bar tender (and personal chef) provided the best service ever, especially the lobster, fish and vegetable dinner grilled to perfection. Setting up the reservation and all transfers required to get to Athens Gate was a breeze thanks to Lori. She took care of all the details for us. We took a snorkeling trip with Lady Leslie Tours to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve at the Reef, Shark and Sting Ray Alley and Caye Caulker. Martin Leslie and his sons are excellent hosts, and snorkeling guides. Best boat ride ever and I will do this trip every time I come back to Belize. The restaurant across the street from Athens Gate has good food and you have to try the lobster fajitas. There is a small market a couple of blocks away and larger grocery stores on the south side of San Pedro. I would definitely stay at Athens Gate again and recommend it to friends and family."

  • Exactly What We Needed!

"My husband and I had a wonderful stay at Sapphire House. The place itself is a cute villa surrounded by a large yard that is well maintained and full of exquisite blooms, interesting textures and colors only native to the tropics. We had coffee in the mornings on the porch. There, we were eye-level with all the birds that perched in the canopy of a tall tree. They were not at all afraid of us. The house has a bird guidebook, too, so you can identify what you’re seeing. Inside, the house is nicely furnished and clean. The kitchen has pretty much everything you need though some of the island food is so cheap, you may not want to bother with preparing meals. There’s a tamale man who rides around on a large tricycle with a cooler strapped to the front. His wife’s tamales are truly a treat. Also, there’s a new, open air pupusaria on the island (across from the fake Starbucks) that’s open after 3pm. As you are walking out to The Split, you should also try any of the three vendors that cook right on the beach. All of them are very good and an economical choice. The restaurants are expensive. We also enjoyed the bakery and a man who sells baked goods from his tricycle. The only bad food we had on the island was at the Chinese restaurant across from the bakery. But back to the house! There’s a wonderful library (mostly fiction), so no need to bring books. The internet worked perfectly, even in some very torrential storms. The washer also worked well. Any issues that came up were dealt with by Caye Caulker Rentals very quickly. The sisters that run the agency are wonderful people and we enjoyed talking with them. The only drawback about the agency is that they will tack on 5% to you total cost if you are paying with a credit card. So your total on the contract is not correct if you are using a credit card. We found that the 5% charge is pretty standard on the island if you are using credit cards. We used the ATM at the bank from time to time to avoid extra costs. My husband and I enjoyed snorkeling at The Split, the reef off Caye Caulker and the preserve off Ambergris Caye. We also jogged around the island and took the shelter dogs out for a little exercise. But mostly, we decompressed. We spent two wonderful weeks at Sapphire House with a side trip to Guatemala to see Tikal and Flores. Sapphire house was all we had hoped for and was exactly what we needed."

  • Totally Relaxing

"There is not much point in rewriting all the rave reviews that I have already seen for your unit. It would be enough to say that all favourable reviews were very accurate. From our first correspondence to now we have been extremely satisfied with all aspects of our vacation. We got the much needed recuperation time we so badly needed and only want to say Thank you for sharing your piece of paradise."

  • Wonderful, quiet and relaxing

"Just spent 2 weeks at Don's Windflower, my first time in Belize. The suite was clean with all the necessary kitchen utensils one would need for cooking. Don was a great host and if I needed anything he was immediately attentive to it. His friend Louis helped me find 2 huge slabs of king fish which was positively the best tasting fish I've had in a very long time. I loved taking a dip right there in the canal towards evening. My next door guests, Alfred and Barbara, were absolutely wonderful and fun. I loved the snorkeling with them. Monkey River tour was great too and as was a chocolate tour. I'd go back any time and hope to next year!! This time to share with others."
