  • Outstanding stay in Rum Point

"This was an absolutely excellent property for a family vacation in Grand Cayman. We are 2 adults, 3 children (13 and under), and we definitely would stay here again in the future. It is far from Seven Mile Beach, so if you want to be where the action/nightlife are, you probably want to consider a different property. However, if you want a peaceful neighborhood setting on a quiet cove, with nearby access to phenomenal, deserted beaches, then this is the property for you. We didn't spend too much time at Rum Point itself (the youngest child liked to splash around in the shallows, and we ate lunch there once), but it was nice to be able to walk across the street to catch the boat to Stingray City. Keep in mind the beach bar closes at 5pm (they want you to have dinner at the more expensive restaurant). However, we made the five minute drive to Starfish Point a few times -- what an amazing little beach! There were dozens of starfish in crystal clear water, and even a large stingray swimming around that you could walk right up to. Our advice is to go in the morning, when the beach is usually deserted. We also kayaked out the mouth of the cove to a large beach area that was straight out of a Caribbean postcard. It is technically down the road from Rum Point, but it is difficult to get to on foot, so we always had the beach to ourselves. Crystal clear water, shallow out to 100 yards, simply amazing. Driving around the island was no problem at all. The island is small, and we never felt unsafe. As for the property itself, we were very impressed by how clean it was when we arrived. Considering how much sand is around, the inside of the condo was spotless. All appliances worked properly, and the pool was a perfect place to cool off after a day in the sun. We highly recommend this property and will definitely consider a return trip ourselves."

  • nice but nothing special

"My wife and I are experienced renters, having stayed at over 10 in the past 2 yrs or so. We stayed at #21 at The Retreat at Rum Point for 4 weeks from 1/21-2/18. The location is inconvenient from shopping being a 30 minute drive from the closest major market and gym. It more than makes it up however in tranquility as 7 mile beach is an overcrowded crazy town. We didn’t even go into Georgetown the entire time we were here. We are fitness fanatics and while there a fitness center listed as being onsite it is literally useless so we drove to Savannah for the gym. The unit itself has a partially restricted view of the ocean. (see below)When you stay at a place for 4 weeks you notice every imperfection and this place was no exception but nothing major. While the kitchen is somewhat dated, it is well stocked. The half bath is an unusual and welcome addition. The unit is well appointed and comfortable and was very clean on our arrival. The living room has new furniture.Easily the most comfortable mattress we have ever slept on in a rental. My wife wanted to take it home! As frequent renters this should not be overlooked. Wifi while a little slow worked fine. TBVwas fine but obviously not as inclusive as in US. That said, we got the Super Bowl and TB is the GOAT!The beach is the most tranquil of any we’ve stayed at. Very peaceful. Great for naps! Being right next door to the Rum Point Club and Red Sail watersports was nice. My wife and I are avid scuba divers and were not disappointed. The diving was phenomenal. If you dive, we used Red Sail (Tortuga Divers) exclusively and they were excellent. Get on “The Maze” and “Snapper Hole” sites! The owners put together a welcome review that was second to none. The problem is as you enter the unit and look to your left out the living room window you have a view of a huge pile of construction debris which partially blocks your view of the ocean. Indeed this is to the front right of the unit and just to the right of that beautiful pic they have out the lania. Only one other review mentioned this. Strange. Other units at the Retreat at Rum Point have an unobstructed view. Overall, my wife and I very much enjoyed our stay here. Grand Cayman is a wonderful place for a getaway. The people are as nice as any island we have visited. When we return we’ll probably stay at a different unit."

  • Loved the location and the pool

"This was our second time to Caymen, after a day visit from a cruise two years ago. We weren't sure where we wanted to stay, but decided against Seven Mile Beach area because of the crowds. The North Side seemed to get good reviews, so we gambled and it payed off. Overall, I loved Grand Cayman and the house was a great home base from which to explore. Points on the house location. 1. Great location on quiet side of the island. Virtually no traffic and very peaceful. 2. Construction was going on across the street. It didn't bother us much and we got a discount because of it. 3. Rum Point Club down the block. I wasn't super impressed with it. The swimming area was ok. There are better beaches on the island. The restaurant and bar were super expensive and the food was mediocre at best. But you can book excursions to snorkel or go to Sting Ray City there. That was convenient.l 4. The house is actually on a bay, not the ocean. It was fine, but we couldn't really swim there. There were jelly fish in the bay while we were there. My kids did kayak though. We tried to see the Bioluminescence at night, but weren't lucky enough. Not sure if it was the timing or what. 5. We were a quick five minute drive to Starfish Point which was a nice beach. 6. There is no grocery store nearby. There is a place called Chisolms about 5 - 10 minutes away, but the prices were really high there. Stop on the way in at the corner of Hirst and Shamrock. There is a decent IGA there. 7. You'll need to plan a couple of day trips to go over to the more touristy things on the other side of the island. There are some beaches over there definitely worth checking out (Cemetery Beach was a favorite). Points on the house: 1. Very clean. 2. Great pool. Very well kept. This was awesome for the kids. 3. Had outside showers for when we got back from the beach so we didn't have to track in all of the sand. 4. Kitchen is kind of stocked. I've done other VRBO rentals with better kitchen equipment. We could have used some sharp knives for fileting fish (or at least a sharpener). 5. The living room furniture isn't that conducive to family gatherings. We wanted to watch movies a few nights and it was a little uncomfortable. 6. The beds and bedding were all fine. Again - everything was clean. 7. We had enough towels, but did have to launder them a few times. Mostly that's because my kids have an issue with hanging up their towels. All in all - I would recommend."
