  • The View is Everything

"La Bagatelle has a premiere location overlooking the Caribbean and both Pitons. Nothing can compare with the views at any time of day - mornings watching a passing shower sweep across the Pitons while the sun paints a rainbow, sometimes a double one, so close you feel you could touch it, or the delights of a many-colored sunset as small sailing vessels lazily ply the waters in the distance, or even the nighttime illuminated specks of cruise ships on the horizon off to the next port of call. With the superlatives views come extraordinary paths to reach it - if you opt to rent a car, it should absolutely be 4-wheel drive as the "road" from Soufriere to the house is extremely steep, more often than not washed out by rains and containing several hair-pin turns. Otherwise, hired drivers are the way to go if you want to get out and see the island. We preferred the independence of our own vehicle and one does get used to the challenge of the ascent over the course of a day or two. Almost everything you want to see/do is within a 30 minute drive or so from the house so the location is excellent - visiting the volcano and the Diamond waterfall, hiking Gros Piton, doing the Tet Paul Nature trail, and last but not least, wandering Soufriere's streets to enjoy the local color, the market or taking off for a snorkeling/sailing half-day trip. All beaches are public so we visited Sugar Beach [located between the two Pitons - they truck in white sand so it's quite nice] and had lunch [tapas and VERY expensive so order carefully] and the resort down the road, Anse Chastanet, which has a grayer, more gravely sand. The house is fine with a huge open room at the second level and a small pool [unheated] at the side. There is no question it could use some updating and freshening up, however. There is mosquito netting over all the beds though we never had an issue with insects and the entire house is gated with bars and padlocks [you'll get a hefty set of keys] though it's hard to see how anyone could get up here and want to break in but must be necessary. We felt completely safe, there are villas on both sides. We were not planning on doing any cooking and so we relied on "menu" lists from the owner which the staff would prepare - four dinners. Unfortunately, we were disappointed in the meals as the ingredients we picked from the list including sauces and fresh vegetables were not followed. Make sure to communicate exactly what you want."

  • Three weeks of relaxation & fun.

"We were so happy we rented this apartment-so conveniently placed for the beach-Dover,St Lawrence Gap entertainment, across the road from a convenience store, taxis just round the corner , the local bus route 5 mins walk away & some great eating places within easy walking distances. The apartment met all our needs. The description of all amenities were accurate, beds were comfortable & the place was very clean. Rob the owner was very prompt in answering all our emails & all questions thrown at him. The staff from the management company that looked after the apartment were also very efficient (shout out to Katherine who met us on our arrival at the apartment & answered any outstanding questions especially about the island & Gregg who was also very helpful in sorting out the AC) I must also mention Oretta who came to the apartment every three days to clean & replace linen & towels-she did a wonderful job. We enjoyed Barbados-where you can be as lively or as relaxed as you wish. Most nights after some activity or not during the day - we would relax on the balcony-drink in hand waiting for the entertainment from the Jazz bar Scoopies across the road. Some nights we would even join in & do some dancing!! All entertainment finished at midnight. The noise might not appeal to everyone but we loved it-after all it is Barbados. Just a note though if you didn't want the noise we found just be shutting all the doors you heard very little. I would highly recommend this safe & modern property in a great location."
