Cabo Rojo literally translates to "Red Cape", a name that comes from the color of the spectacular eroded cliffs in the southwest of Puerto Rico. If you have the time, you should consider swinging by Los Morillos, a lighthouse which still warns passing ships to this day. Alternatively, culture vultures will find everything they need in the capital of the West, Mayaguez.

There's little more you need to bring than a good book and a cold drink. Those who aren't beach bums shouldn't worry, as there's more water sports along the Puerto Rican coast than you could possibly try in one trip. Spend sunny mornings sea kayaking or paddle boarding along the coast, or join one of the daily high-season scuba diving charters to get up close to some fascinating underwater life.
Goodbye winter, hello sunshine in Rojo Cabo
If you're looking to escape the winter blues back home, you can do so by staying in one of the Rojo Cabo vacation rentals and hit the sundrenched western shores of Puerto Rico. Between mid-December and March, the skies are endlessly blue and the temperature hovers around the mid-70s. While this all sounds rather tempting, there are fewer travelers visiting later in spring. If you score a rental between April and May, you'll pay considerably less and benefit from far fewer people crowding the beaches, or bobbing around in the ocean. It's a win win situation.
Birdwatchers take note of Rojo Cabo
While it might be tempting to while away your vacation on the beach, those who make the effort to head south to the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge are rewarded with a variety of fauna. If you're a bird watcher, it should be of particularly interest because this 1,800-acre reserve is packed to the brim with exotic avifauna. Try to leave some time for the Butterfly Trail, which has more of these colorful insects than you could possibly imagine. More wildlife can be found on the nearby Isle de Mona, which has been dubbed the "Galapagos of the Caribbean".
Transportation options to and around Cabo Rojo
Fly into Mayagüez (MAZ-Eugenio María de Hostos), the closest airport, located 11.5 mi (18.5 km) from the city center. If you can't find a flight that's convenient for your trip, you might consider flying into Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN), which is 28.3 mi (45.5 km) away.
