Bathed by the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, Puerto Rico is an island of awe-inspiring mountains, enchanting waterfalls and lush tropical rainforest. Claimed by Christopher Columbus in 1493, the U.S. territory has a rich colonial heritage, seen in its weathered centuries-old forts and grand mansions, and the colorful old town that beautifies its capital. Many of the luxurious Puerto Rico vacation rentals sit steps from the silky, sandy beaches, making it the perfect destination for a beach escape – but don't worry, with Puerto Rico's vibrant art scene, buzzing nightlife and endless activities, there's never a dull moment.
With the sun-soaked beaches gilding the northern edge of Puerto Rico's capital, San Juan, sunbathing and swimming are always popular. When you want to up the pace, surfing, scuba diving, parasailing and kayaking are all on offer too. On dry land, there is championship golf, tennis and horseback rides, while hikes through the El Yunque rain forest are rewarded with refreshing dips beneath waterfalls. And don't forget to sample the local wares, which range from rum and handmade cigars to artisan-made trinkets. After a busy day, retreat to your Puerto Rico vacation rental for some spa-style pampering.
A Puerto Rico vacation rental in the capital, vivacious San Juan, places you within easy reach of the island's star attractions. One of these is Old San Juan, a neighborhood known for its quaint narrow streets and colorful Spanish colonial buildings. Of the island's many historical forts, 2 of the most famous are the powder-blue 16th-century La Fortaleza, now the official residence for the Governor of Puerto Rico, and the domineering Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Built in 1539, the castle was used to protect the city's port and features 140-foot high walls and breathtaking views over the glittering Caribbean.
Puerto Rico has a tropical rainforest climate, and the island luxuriates in warm weather all year round. Average daily temperatures are a very toasty 85 degrees in the lower areas, dropping to the low 70s in the mountainous parts. The island's rainy season takes places from April through to November, with May and fall typically being the rainiest times, which mostly affects the north coast and highlands. Despite this, the best time to visit is anywhere from early spring to June, when the winter crowds have all gone home. This gives you mid-80s temperatures on most days.
From sun-kissed beaches and misty mountains, to mangroves, caves and waterfalls, Puerto Rico's landscape is always camera-ready. Its most majestic natural wonder, however, is the El Yunque National Forest, situated in the northeast of the island. Spanning almost 29,000 acres of vegetation-draped terrain, the park is dotted with bamboo groves, babbling rivers and cascading waterfalls that empty into enticing pools. Here nature lovers can hike the trails, or visit the El Portal Visitor Center, which grants them access to a walkway which winds through the rainforest canopy. At night, visitors are treated to a concerto of calling coqui tree frogs.
