"We just returned from a week in St. Maarten. I hope I get to post photos here so anyone reading this can see them. 3 bedrooms, air conditioning in each one. The bedroom facing the pool is where we slept and the hurricane shutters made the room so dark. Perfect for sleeping in. :) The house is fully equipped with 2 refrigerators, a washer/dryer, regular coffee pot and a Nespresso machine, toaster, oven, microwave and more dishes and pots and pans than you'll ever use. There are about 15 steps down to the house, so if you have an issue with that, just know this beforehand. We met Filippe at the pharmacy at the top of the hill. He guides you right to the house. It is tucked away, so arriving in the daytime is a BONUS so you can get your bearings as to where you are. The pool is lovely. The little beach is just that, little. If you're looking for long walks on the beach, this isn't the place for you. I fed fish off the little dock. Some big (like tarpon big) and some little needle-nose fish. There are jelly fish in the area, also, so AQUA SOCKS are a great idea. It is rocky right off the beach, so I was happy I had them. We had 2 kayaks and a paddle board at our disposal. We took the kayaks out every day and went to Pinel Island for lunch and snorkeling one day. The snorkeling was 12 euro/13 USD, but the snorkeling was -- to be honest -- average at best. We've been to Turks & Caicos the last 3 years, and the snorkeling there beats this hands down. That being said, I still think you should do it. Everyone is friendly and helpful. You're on the French side, but everyone seems to speak English anyway. You'll see lots of iguanas and hermit crabs on the island too. The TV has 3 American channels, BBC, CNN and MSNBC, so we stayed current on the news at night :). Cocci Market is right up the road. BRING YOUR OWN BAGS if you plan on getting a lot of things for the week. There is another market down the main road that has more variety of wine and beer if you're looking for libations. Prices were all reasonable.
Restaurants: We arrived on Sunday and not much is open on Sundays -- keep that in mind. We went to Rancho Del Sol in Orient Bay. Tex-Mex, pizza, seafood, pasta. Happy hour from 4-7, which was a nice surprise, so 2-for-1 drinks. Jam Rox and Grain de Poivre were lovely and had wonderful fish dinners. Our favorite was Pancho Villa. Mexican food that's fresh and the owner, Joliee, is a delight. GO VISIT HER."
