  • It Doesn't Get Much Better Than This

"We vacation on St. John as often as possible, normally once a year. This year we were fortunate enough to visit a second time with a group of friends. We selected Villa Carolina for it's view and location. What a fantastic home! It was the perfect size for our group of 7. The outdoor pool deck was the nicest outdoor area we've had at any of the villas we've stayed at to date. From the infinity pool to the comfy deck furniture, we spent a great deal of time soaking up the view, eating meals, drinking coffee and enjoying a late night glass of wine I can't think of a time that we were more relaxed, laughed a ton and truly enjoyed this special place. The three bedrooms are fairly equal with nice furniture and comfy beds. Plenty of drawers and closet space (although I packed really light this trip). The kitchen had just about everything you could want to cook great meals and even though there is a lovely dining room table, we ate all meals around the table and chairs on the pool deck. The living room had a couch, chairs, TV, sound system but we seldom sat in here and only turned on the TV once throughout the week. It was great to have a washer and dryer throughout the week as it allowed me to minimize the amount of clothing I brought along on this visit. While there is a villa slightly up hill to the right, we never heard nor saw anyone all week. Villa Carolina gives you a secluded feeling, yet you are close to all the Coral Bay restaurants and the north shore beaches. For us, Villa Carolina sits in a perfect spot! Sharon, the owner, was a delight to work with and I already know we'll be back to Villa Carolina for another visit. In fact, I wish I was still there. Thanks to Sharon for sharing her beautiful home with us."

  • Christmas at Banana Cabana

"Banana Cabana was a bit snug for us, but its cute and it worked out fine. My wife and I brought our two boys (ages 19 and 22). The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The main upper level includes the living/dining area, pullout sofa, a great (small) deck, kitchen and main bathroom. Across a small deck was a separate building with the master (queen) bedroom with its own deck and another bathroom. Take a few steps outside and down a flight of stairs to the lower level, there is another (queen) bedroom with a deck. We chose to sleep downstairs and give the boys the run of the upper level, alternating nights between the pull out sofa and master bedroom. Modest, but appropriate furnishings. Plenty of sheets and towels. We used the outside grill and washer/dryer and and all worked well. The refrigerator took a couple of days to get cool and we almost called for a repair, but it ended up getting cool. Follow the directions in the guest book! The stereo system did not work as the CD player was stuck in the closed position, we could not dial in radio stations, there were no cassettes (!) to play, and no inputs for iPhone or computer. Internet was good during the day, but slow or off at night. The pool is up the hill just a little bit and was unused, so we had it all to ourselves whenever we wanted to take and end of day dip. Great deck, hammock and view from up there! My only criticism is that the directions could be clearer about reaching the house. We arrived after dark and the zigzag hill up to the house was treacherous in the dark the first time. We actually started sliding backwards and almost went off the road! I am a great driver, and had the directions been a bit clearer I would have been better prepared for the first trip up the hill. After that, I got the hang of it and it was fine, except it is very slippery after it rains. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IN LOW GEAR IS A MUST. Overall, I would recommend this property for two couples, or a family with older children, as long as you are OK with them being separated by having to go outside to the other building or downstairs. Both are just steps away. The location is quiet (with the exception of the early morning roosters crowing!) and the view from the upper decks is lovely. Finally, I will say the location is great. Close to all there is in Coral Bay without being right in it, and close to all the east end beaches. Brown Bay and Hansen Bay were our faves. Enjoy Banana Cabana and rustic Coral Bay!"

  • Luminaria is amazing!

"Our family group of seven adults and a 3-moth old baby stayed at Luminaria for two weeks. It was a wonderful experience. First, the house is beautiful--well laid out and tastefully decorated. The kitchen is well-equipped ( a good thing, because with a baby, we did not eat out). We were even able to watch a little of the NCAA basketball tournament! The living area is very spacious, and gave us plenty of room to watch basketball, read a book, take a nap, or sit in the sun, without getting in each other's way. The pool was lovely, especially for those who had to stay home with the baby while the rest of the group went snorkeling. The driveway is very steep--even with dry weather, you will need a 4-wheel drive vehicle. But that was a worthwhile trade-off to get the amazing views. I can't imagine that many places have views over both Coral Bay and the Drake Passage. We enjoyed watching the boats in the Passage and the sailboats in Coral Bay. The Viva Villa team was great, supplying us with a first-rate greeter (Magabe) and responding quickly to our complaint of the downstairs bathroom drains clogging. The downside of being on top of a mountain is that you have to drive to go anywhere. But we managed to snorkel at least once a day, and even took the baby with us a couple of times. Plenty of shade at Trunk Bay (but get there early), Maho Bay and Francis Bay. We also enjoyed our snorkel-sunset sail with Virgin Magic Charters. We'd come back in a heartbeat if St. John were a little easier to get to."

  • Our most peaceful visit to the island

"Our 4th visit to St John and our most peaceful visit yet. We stayed in the studio and loved it! Both Russ and Liz were great! A very hard working couple that were always available if we needed them but we never felt they were intruding. As mentioned in other reviews the cottage has everything that you would need. During our stay Russ completed an upgrade to the water storage and supply for the studio ,which worked wonderfully.Although remote, the cottage is a short walk to the bus stop which stops at Salt Pond Bay and then heads back to Cruz Bay. The buses seem more reliable than in past years, and the price is only $1/per person. If you like to hike ,the cottage is close to several of the most popular trails. Beaches are nearby and Coral Bay has plenty of good choices for dining. We found the cottage to be perfect !! We are planning a trip for next year and hopefully will stay at the cottage/studio again."
