  • Idyllic beach house, with miles of pristine beach

"This house is a special place. It is a carefully decorated house, with a backyard garden that leads you to a pristine 3-mile long semi-private beach. Playa Grande, which is separated by an estuary from the much more crowded and touristy Playa Tamarindo. Interestingly enough, hardly anyone from Playa Tamarindo crosses over to Playa Grande, as far as we could tell. So, you end up on Playa Grande with a beautiful expanse of beach, with hardly anyone around. It's lovely. My wife, 15-year old son, and I just returned from a fantastic week at Casa Baula. The house is well-appointed and maintained. Compared to our many short-term rental stays in northern California, this house had the most well stocked kitchen we've seen. Nice pots and pans, tons of dishes and glassware, the classic Osterizer blender powering through the ice cubes in our guanabana and passion fruit smoothies. We felt very comfortable making all of our breakfasts and lunches in the house, and a few dinners as well. The services for the house are a real plus. The caretaker is always available by cell, and was happy to meet us at the house at 11 pm because our flight was delayed. As a retired professional chef, he even bakes delicious baguettes and croissants and delivers them in the morning to the house-- how cool is that! Cleaning staff spiffs up the house 3x per week, and it looks like the front and back yards are done weekly. The concierge service that the owners connect you with make the entire vacation a turnkey operation. They set you up with your rental car, airport transportation, and all your tours. All of that worked out flawlessly for us-- everything on time and very enjoyable. Since the concierge works out of the local surf shop, about a mile from the house, we had easy access to tons of surf boards. Paddle boarding at playa grande I would only do at low tide on a calm day, unless you're comfortable with waves. At this time of year, when the surf conditions aren't perfect, but still good, we quickly figured out the early morning high tide was good for surfing, and the low tide was fine for boogie boarding and walks on the beach. AC in the house worked great. The ping pong table was great fun-- even the paddles were in good condition. Wifi worked fine-- the master BR was sometimes a dead spot, but hey, you're in Costa Rica so you should be disconnecting a bit anyway. Very nice to have a full washer and dryer. We used the outdoor gas grill for a few dinners--worked great."

  • Family Surf Vacation

"We spent 7 days in playa grande at casa muy grande; we lived the pura vida to the fullest. We comfortably fit 7 adults and 4 kids in the house. The open kitchen and living space was ideal for entertaining and relaxing, while the 2 acres of land, hammocks, pool area and of course the beach gave us plenty of room to spread out. The house management team was super friendly and made fabulous dinners - the guacamole was extraordinary. When we wanted to eat out we had plenty of options within walking distance - we even ventured into Tamarindo for an afternoon, enjoying a great beachfront meal. The days involved waking up early and surfing, lounging at the pool, and more surfing and swimming as the sun dropped into the pacific. We rented surf boards and bogey boards from the local surf shop and everyone did their best learning on the friendly waves. A must do is the estuary boat tour - we walked 10 minutes up the beach to the boats - paid 10 bucks each and saw numerous birds, monkeys and a HUGE alligator. This was a great trip - and the house perfectly suited our needs. We would definitely go back."

  • Comfortable, spacious, modern .. perfect!

"My best friend and I are in the middle of a year long rental here. We couldn't be happier. A short walk to the most amazing beach, sunsets and waves are just the beginning. The yard is lovingly maintained, the pool is magnificent, and the community complex is safe and private. Inside are 3 comfortable bedrooms (queen, king, 2 single beds), each with their own bath. The beds are comfortable and there are great closets for keeping your stuff organized. The kitchen takes the ultimate prize in my opinion. It has the smartest microwave I've ever seen. There is a "reheat" button that just knows what to do. The house is just built so smartly. The tile floors help keep everything cool and easy to clean. The new flat screen TV in the downstairs living area is great for a good movie, or even watching the news from the kitchen. The laundry machines work great, so don't over pack. For a home base while traveling to Costa Rica, this is the perfect spot to compliment your Pura Vida experience!!"

  • Perfect week

"A terrific week at Casa Velas. We were 3 families--7 adults, 4 kids under 12 and the house met all our needs. Having the pool and beach so accessible meant the kids were always entertained and the spaciousness of the property met the adults could relax and even work in privacy. Having the 5 bedrooms air conditioned was a godsend in a very hot week. The gentle sloping beach meant the kids could play in the water while the adults surfed. Ana the cook and housekeeper cooked us 2 great meals and kept the house free of sand. When we cooked we realized the cookware-- especially the skillets and frying pans need updating. Not having a car was not a problem. We often took the 15 minute walk to the estuary and took the boat ($1 per person) to Tamarindo. Don't try swimming it---one day we saw the 10 foot crocodile. When we made reservations at Seven for their Friday night barbecue ($10) they sent a pickup truck to pick all of us up and return us afterwards. Mariana of "You Are Costa Rica" provided us with transportation, tours, surfing lessons and even some supplies (a case of beer) as well as advice. We were also fortunate to be there when the mangoes on the property were ripe and when the Howler monkeys came to eat. A great week and we all hope to return."
