  • Wonderful wonderful setting

"This is a fabulous setting; a little house set 100 yards back from the beach. A private path to the beach leads from the house patio. It is a private setting with lots of large trees casting shade when and where needed in the afternoon. We are not resort people and so this charming place was just perfect for us. We were there in early May and it was house,. The house is suited for the heat; thick adobe style walls and A/C in all rooms made for cool afternoons when the sun was high. This was the dry season, leading to water shortages everywhere; water pressure was low, but not a problem at all. We had water for all our needs. The location, aside from being on the beach, is a short walk to Tamarindo, a bustling little coastal town with lots of restaurants and amenities. We did not rent a car and were able to do lots of activities in Tamarindo and rent taxis to take us to other beaches when we wanted. Surf boards are available to rent in Tamarindo and in the area of the little house. It should also be mentioned that the house is located in a small community which has a grocery store and two restaurants as well as a surfboard shop within 5 minutes walking from the house. Kelly and David were most gracious and met all our needs immediately. For example, David repaired a small door hinge problem within half a day of telling him the problem. Remember, this is not San Jose, and when things need repair, it is usually San Jose, 300 miles away that usually has to get the item to you. This is a charming place, well situated so one doesn't have to have a car. I hope to come back to this place many, many more times."

  • Perfect week

"A terrific week at Casa Velas. We were 3 families--7 adults, 4 kids under 12 and the house met all our needs. Having the pool and beach so accessible meant the kids were always entertained and the spaciousness of the property met the adults could relax and even work in privacy. Having the 5 bedrooms air conditioned was a godsend in a very hot week. The gentle sloping beach meant the kids could play in the water while the adults surfed. Ana the cook and housekeeper cooked us 2 great meals and kept the house free of sand. When we cooked we realized the cookware-- especially the skillets and frying pans need updating. Not having a car was not a problem. We often took the 15 minute walk to the estuary and took the boat ($1 per person) to Tamarindo. Don't try swimming it---one day we saw the 10 foot crocodile. When we made reservations at Seven for their Friday night barbecue ($10) they sent a pickup truck to pick all of us up and return us afterwards. Mariana of "You Are Costa Rica" provided us with transportation, tours, surfing lessons and even some supplies (a case of beer) as well as advice. We were also fortunate to be there when the mangoes on the property were ripe and when the Howler monkeys came to eat. A great week and we all hope to return."

  • Beautifully located beach house

"Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed staying at this beautifully located beach house on Playa Grande. Some of my fondest memories include waking up in the morning, brewing myself a cup of authentic Costa Rican coffee, enjoying it on the quiet pristine beach of Playa Grande as the sun rose, and then plunging into the ocean for a morning surf. Located a short walk down the beach from Tamarindo - this beach home blends peace and tranquility with the beat of a bustling tourist town. Jorge - the home owner - was very helpful and attentive, and we can't wait to return."

  • Peaceful Retreat

"Recently stayed at Casa Marina. Nice quiet neighborhood with several restaurants within walking distance and a mini super grocery store. Everyone very pleasant and welcoming. Marina was very friendly but also gives you your own space. Our villa was very clean and comfortable. AC and amenities for cooking. Pool was also cleaned throughout the day and was always cool and refreshing. Felt very private. Marina set up a nice river tour with a guide that was very knowledgeable and sociable. We even learned a new way to slice and eat pineapple from him. Very short walk to beach. Low key community but accessible to Tamarindo with a short skip across the river on a river taxi for only a $1.00. Look for the German Bakery truck to come by on Tuesday and Friday afternoons beeping his horn. Picked up some great home made sausage and pastries."
