  • Idyllic beach house, with miles of pristine beach

"This house is a special place. It is a carefully decorated house, with a backyard garden that leads you to a pristine 3-mile long semi-private beach. Playa Grande, which is separated by an estuary from the much more crowded and touristy Playa Tamarindo. Interestingly enough, hardly anyone from Playa Tamarindo crosses over to Playa Grande, as far as we could tell. So, you end up on Playa Grande with a beautiful expanse of beach, with hardly anyone around. It's lovely. My wife, 15-year old son, and I just returned from a fantastic week at Casa Baula. The house is well-appointed and maintained. Compared to our many short-term rental stays in northern California, this house had the most well stocked kitchen we've seen. Nice pots and pans, tons of dishes and glassware, the classic Osterizer blender powering through the ice cubes in our guanabana and passion fruit smoothies. We felt very comfortable making all of our breakfasts and lunches in the house, and a few dinners as well. The services for the house are a real plus. The caretaker is always available by cell, and was happy to meet us at the house at 11 pm because our flight was delayed. As a retired professional chef, he even bakes delicious baguettes and croissants and delivers them in the morning to the house-- how cool is that! Cleaning staff spiffs up the house 3x per week, and it looks like the front and back yards are done weekly. The concierge service that the owners connect you with make the entire vacation a turnkey operation. They set you up with your rental car, airport transportation, and all your tours. All of that worked out flawlessly for us-- everything on time and very enjoyable. Since the concierge works out of the local surf shop, about a mile from the house, we had easy access to tons of surf boards. Paddle boarding at playa grande I would only do at low tide on a calm day, unless you're comfortable with waves. At this time of year, when the surf conditions aren't perfect, but still good, we quickly figured out the early morning high tide was good for surfing, and the low tide was fine for boogie boarding and walks on the beach. AC in the house worked great. The ping pong table was great fun-- even the paddles were in good condition. Wifi worked fine-- the master BR was sometimes a dead spot, but hey, you're in Costa Rica so you should be disconnecting a bit anyway. Very nice to have a full washer and dryer. We used the outdoor gas grill for a few dinners--worked great."

  • We'll be back...

"9 of us went ranging in age from 3-68 for a week of total paradise. The Villa had it all...charm for sure but everything one might need to make it totally comfortable. Walking to the nearly private beach was convenient and if you surf, you are in for a real treat! There are restaurants within walking distance that were good and the surf shop (which was a short drive) made reservations for several activities for us. The people were so warm and accommodating. The caretakers were helpful and their children are precious. I'd go back in a heartbeat and hope to one day!!!"

  • Family vacation

"Villa Orquideas was our home base for a 2 week Xmas vacation for our family. It was impeccably clean, high quality linens, super confortable beds and sofas, ample kitchen linens, beach towels, shower towels, paper/cleaning necessities. Kitchen with full appliances, well stocked, a few minor items missing upon arrival, replaced the very next day by condo manager. Many different areas within the house and grounds allowing common time (large dinning room table/ open kitchen living area) as well as private time (2 different living rooms on 2 floors, and several terrasses). 5 homes nestled around a common pool, all tenants during our stay quiet, curteous and pleasant. NO other neighbours. Very short walk to the beach; ocean view through the trees as soon as you walk out of the property grounds to the left. Most amazing beach, both surfable and swimmable ! Another beach to the right, a few minutes walk, TOTALLY private even through Xmas and New Years. Property owner super helpful and accomodating."

  • A relaxing beachfront retreat

"We traveled to Costa Rica for the first time and rented this wonderful beach front home for a few days. Wish we could have stayed longer, but our itinerary did not allow a lot of time. It is in a great location, in a very small town which is extremely secluded. Although the trip from San Jose was over 4 hours long, the beachfront home can't be beat. The sand is steps from your backyard and there are very few people around. It is nice to be secluded, however it is best you are prepared for it. When we arrived it was late and dark and we didn't have any idea where to get food. Luckily, we had stopped at a market on the way in and managed to cook up a meal for the 10 of us. You need to plan ahead if you want to go to the town of Tamarindo because a boat will take you over there for $1 but after 4pm don't plan on anyone being there to take you back. So most nights we stayed in and had the chef, Marcia cook for us. What a treat! She is an amazing cook and she took such good care of us. She spoke only in Spanish so my son got a wonderful refresher course and they spent the weekend conversing. She was such a important part of our great experience. It was nice to know that her family was living on the property and there to help with anything we needed (like when the locks didn't work on the pool house the first night and all 4 kids had to sleep in the main house with us). She also did a great job of cleaning the house daily which was great. The main house is spacious, but broken up into several smaller rooms. The only thing lacking a bit was seating in the family room, and the dining table only has chairs for 7 so we had to pull in patio chairs from outside. But it was plenty of room for us and we had a wonderful and memorable vacation at Playa Grande! The estuary tour and the catamaran sunset cruise were a highlight. Such a beautiful country. Wish we could go back."
