  • Fantastic Experience

"What a great experience as we had a total of 8 men staying at the house on a surf trip. The house was really clean and comfortable and you cannot beat the location. We actually were not in the house much as we were driving up and down the cost most days looking for surf and adventure. What was truly fantastic was when we got home the house was cleaned, the dishes cleaned, beds made and towels refreshed. Maria the on-site house keeper was great! As well they have a night watchman to ensure nothing goes missing while you sleep. There is a very large enclosed car lot as well. Shawna who overseas the property and makes all the arrangements was excellent! She pre-stocked the house for us with a custom list of items so when we arrived beer was already in the fridge. The location cannot be beat as Playa Grande is beautiful white sand beach and the community is quiet. If you want crazy then a short drive to Tamarindo is all it takes. I highly recommend the house!!! Thanks Shawna and Maria!! Pura Vida!!"

  • Perfect week

"A terrific week at Casa Velas. We were 3 families--7 adults, 4 kids under 12 and the house met all our needs. Having the pool and beach so accessible meant the kids were always entertained and the spaciousness of the property met the adults could relax and even work in privacy. Having the 5 bedrooms air conditioned was a godsend in a very hot week. The gentle sloping beach meant the kids could play in the water while the adults surfed. Ana the cook and housekeeper cooked us 2 great meals and kept the house free of sand. When we cooked we realized the cookware-- especially the skillets and frying pans need updating. Not having a car was not a problem. We often took the 15 minute walk to the estuary and took the boat ($1 per person) to Tamarindo. Don't try swimming it---one day we saw the 10 foot crocodile. When we made reservations at Seven for their Friday night barbecue ($10) they sent a pickup truck to pick all of us up and return us afterwards. Mariana of "You Are Costa Rica" provided us with transportation, tours, surfing lessons and even some supplies (a case of beer) as well as advice. We were also fortunate to be there when the mangoes on the property were ripe and when the Howler monkeys came to eat. A great week and we all hope to return."

  • Great escape

"I am divorced mother of 19 & 20 year old children. We, along with 2 of their friends stayed in this lovely home. It is a great place to escape if you are looking for a peaceful retreat, yet there are plenty of adventure options if desired. The home is clean and as pictured. The kitchen is well equipped and functional and the open layout of the home keeps everyone "together". The property manager, cleaning staff and concierge were extraordinarily helpful. Take advantage of the fresh baked goods delivered to the door!"

  • A relaxing beachfront retreat

"We traveled to Costa Rica for the first time and rented this wonderful beach front home for a few days. Wish we could have stayed longer, but our itinerary did not allow a lot of time. It is in a great location, in a very small town which is extremely secluded. Although the trip from San Jose was over 4 hours long, the beachfront home can't be beat. The sand is steps from your backyard and there are very few people around. It is nice to be secluded, however it is best you are prepared for it. When we arrived it was late and dark and we didn't have any idea where to get food. Luckily, we had stopped at a market on the way in and managed to cook up a meal for the 10 of us. You need to plan ahead if you want to go to the town of Tamarindo because a boat will take you over there for $1 but after 4pm don't plan on anyone being there to take you back. So most nights we stayed in and had the chef, Marcia cook for us. What a treat! She is an amazing cook and she took such good care of us. She spoke only in Spanish so my son got a wonderful refresher course and they spent the weekend conversing. She was such a important part of our great experience. It was nice to know that her family was living on the property and there to help with anything we needed (like when the locks didn't work on the pool house the first night and all 4 kids had to sleep in the main house with us). She also did a great job of cleaning the house daily which was great. The main house is spacious, but broken up into several smaller rooms. The only thing lacking a bit was seating in the family room, and the dining table only has chairs for 7 so we had to pull in patio chairs from outside. But it was plenty of room for us and we had a wonderful and memorable vacation at Playa Grande! The estuary tour and the catamaran sunset cruise were a highlight. Such a beautiful country. Wish we could go back."
