  • If you need your CNN fix, Starbucks and a scone in the morning, this is not the place for you, hon.

"However, if you enjoy privacy, seclusion, nature, sunshine and a place all your own, this is it!! Fly into Liberia and in advance, rent a car. If you rent a diesel, get a turbo. If you need WiFi, get a transponder from the rental agency ($10/USD/Day). Before you leave your home, download the Viber app onto your smart phone so you can call and video chat world-wide for free on the Wifi. Bring DVD's for kids. On the flight in, make your menu and shopping list. The villa has all the usual cooking utensils and condiments stocked. On the way there, stop at the Maxi-Pali in Santa Cruz and pick up your meal staples, veg, beer, wine and liquor. Prices are very reasonable compared to US. They take credit cards. You can withdraw money into Colones across the street at the International Bank. Use the ATM in the lobby. Options are in English. You will need them for tips and purchasing fruit and produce at roadside stands. Prepare to navigate your way to the villa on paved highways and plenty of gravel road. There's really no quick way to get anywhere so plan ahead. No worries because we just wanted to hunker down and relax. The lighted pool is just outside the living room complete with two fountains. There's a lighted upper deck that perfect for evening cocktails & nature watching. Each night families of monkeys in the canopy almost within reaching distance. Rooms are appropriately furnished including tons of outdoor furniture for lounging, dining and card playing. Baths include clean, step-down showers, lavs and toilets. Master has a big walk-in closet. Kitchen is appropriately set up with full-size fridge, range and micro. Godsend is the W/D in the laundry room. Bring some laundry soap packets with you. Pack lightly, you'll spend all your time in swimsuits, shorts, tees and flops. Ask around for the directions to the fishmonger, Hector, in Playa Lagarto. Daily catch may include snapper, grouper and octopus. Get there by noon. Snapper, cilantro, garlic, onion, lime and butter in a foil pouch over the grill is outstanding. Playa Negro and Pitahaya have unspoiled beaches and decent surf. Tamarindo is touristy, lots of tee-shirt and coffee shops, etc. The beach at Lola's has lots of surfers and families enjoying the beach. Shelter and food are available. At darkfall, turn off all the lights, drop your suit, walk into the pool and watch the bright stars and listen to the wildlife in the jungle. PV! Thanks Blair, owner and John, local neighbor."

  • Walking distance to best beach in the area!

"Playa Avellanas is the most lovely beach a person could want! The sand is so pretty with the mixture of back and tan sand.... Actually much prettier than Playa Negro, just to the south. The owners, Camille, and Pascal were so helpful and welcoming and the kids were so cute and fun! The shared kitchen was very well stocked and was a great way to get to know the other couple staying at the adjoining cottage. Plus, it was so much fun to cook and eat with the howler monkeys in the trees just above the kitchen. The super nice local fisherman delivers fish twice weekly right to the cottage, which was delicious! It was so fun to get to chose from his diverse selection of fish. The Palo Verde boat tour on the Tempisque River was a highlight for my husband. Lots of crocs and birds there. Right from the yard at the cottage we saw a variety of birds.....white-tailed nightjars, Inca doves, squirrel cuckoos, black-headed trogons, turquoise-browed motmots plus verigated squirrels and loads of howler monkeys. We loved our stay and didn't want to leave!"

  • Magical stay

"I have nothing but praise for Stef Surf Condos and the Playa Potrero area generally. The place is as beautiful as the pictures - we would have been happy to stay longer. The master bedroom is especially great, with a beautiful deck, high ceilings, a comfortable bed, and the sound of the surf. The housekeeper and groundskeeper were both so attentive. They don't speak much English but with my poco espanol, we got along fine and they were so happy to help. We got some good advice from Lis, the concierge (I should have probably worked with her more). This quiet town is also really nice - lots of great little restaurants that are never busy. Not touristy compared to, say, Tamarindo, or even Flamingo down the road a few minutes. We especially loved the beaches up the coast a few KMs. Roads get bad to the NE (i.e. "Monkey Trail") but just fine between here and Liberia if you pay attention. I could stay a month here."

  • Excellent Adventure

"We had a great experience staying at Casa Ola Perfecta. The house was just as advertised. Mary helped us with zip lining and a boat tour. The maid kept the house clean. The pool is outstanding and it is a downhill walk to the beach. If you surf it is the best we have seen. There are ample local restaurants and Tamarindo is just 30 minutes way."
