  • "We're kinda staying at a mansion"

"Our group of 10 loved Villa Bellitza. When invited to stay out at a beach party, one member of our group said, "No thanks, I'm kinda staying at a mansion." Most people in our crew surfed throughout the day, and the private jungle path to the beach was an asset. No coordination necessary. Want to surf? Walk down the path, and you're there. On the path we saw monkeys and crabs. At the house, we had visitors including iguanas, a coati, raccoons, armadillos, and birds. The house has plenty of room to spread out, hide from the sun, and hide from one another if necessary. Also, the plethora of outdoor seating and an inviting pool area drew the majority of the crew throughout the day. I didn't think the pool would be important. It was. It is HOT in the middle of the day, and the pool was the lifeline. Town water shortages meant that water was turned off from about 6pm-7am, but you get used to it. Tried to sleep without using the A.C. but eventually caved. The A.C.s do a decent job cooling down the rooms, but especially the downstairs of the junior suite. House is walkable to a variety of restaurants and bars, and makes for a fantastic home base. On a couple of days, I never left "the compound." Ed is a great property manager who helped us to coordinate a chef for the group - meals for the group of 10 were $100 (chicken meal) and $120 (fish) - definitely recommended."

  • Cleanest, Safest, and most economical place to stay in Guiones

"Villa Canadiense is clean, safe, and has everything you need to relax. I stayed there for two weeks in January/February 2016 and lived care free and happy. Me and three of my friends surfed all day every day at the world famous Guiones beaches and had a blast. The local Ticos were friendly (as long as you didn't paddle battle for waves) and the local Super (grocery store) and sodas (mom and pop restaurants) were relatively inexpensive and convenient. Villa Canadiense is only a short walk through the jungle to the beach and I woke each morning eager to see the wild dogs and other native critters that inhabited the area. At the Villa, we had everything we needed. We cooked plenty of meals, relaxed by the pool, listened to local music and partied. One night, we even had dinner with the owner of the Villa. She was great. There was plenty of room for all of us and four longboards. Do yourself a favor and DO NOT LOOK AT ANY OTHER PLACES IN GUIONES. Villa Canadiense is the cleanest, safest, economical, and most convenient place to stay. Each day we left a tip for the cleaners, and most of the time, if we didn't specifically tell her to take it, we would return from surfing to find the tip untouched. The staff is like family and made our stay worry-free. We already booked our stay for next year and plan to return there each year to surf and take in the local scene."

  • Great week in Paradise

"Terrific alternative to an all-inclusive. Rather than just a nice room, we loved having a fully equipped, kitchen, laundry room, and 3 TV's, all included in our Beautiful 3 BR condo overlooking golf course and very convenient to beaches, dining, and many tours. In addition to the comprehensive information package provided by the owner, we met several owners and renters who gave us good suggestions for dining and tours. Another plus is the security. We observed security personnel making their rounds every night. Great beach club, too."

  • Manage expectations and you'll like it

"First the good: the view is spectacular, and no photos do it any justice. The view, the pool, the location close to so many great beaches all make this a great place to day trip and see the Guanacaste area, provided you have a car. 4WD recommended, but not essential. The pool was great! My 6 year old daughter went from tentative swimmer to a fish in 6 days, and her swimming instructors couldn't believe it. Nice views, comfy beds (with a caveat below), and a tasteful decor. For 3 of us, it was the right size. Now the bad: first of all, the owner disappeared about two weeks before our arrival. I wrote several times asking for directions, etc. and no reply. Only when I was already in Costa Rica and filled out the form for prospective renters did I get a reply, the night before our arrival. Personally I don't like to travel this way. Maybe I've a lot to learn about "Pura Vida." As I said, the place has a great view, but is poorly equipped for someone with experience staying in VRBO properties. With so many photos of the kitchen and guests dining on the patio, I expected more. The kitchen is stocked as if a bachelor lived there - more George Foreman grills than wine glasses, and that's no exaggeration. There is basically one set of dishes, matching coffee mugs, some silverware and not much else. As someone who likes to cook I was extremely disappointed with so barren a kitchen. No mixing bowls, no potato peeler, no measuring cups, nothing even the most basic of kitchens would have to make a decent scratch meal. No spices, not even salt and pepper. I'd have gladly traded the cute welcome flashlights for a few spices and essential kitchen tools. Carlos was mostly helpful, but it always seemed like asking him for something was a little inconvenient for him. We did not realize that once we went through the stocked two rolls of toilet paper we'd have to buy our own. The Wifi was on and off; this must have impacted Carlos as well, as this was the one problem we had that carried a certain sense of urgency. That said, the TV was nice, and I encouraged our girl to watch her favorite cartoons in Spanish. No bedspreads on the bed. Just a topsheet. Hope that suits you cause that's all you get. And the poolside grill? Just a piece of aluminum grating. Seriously, another $300 on some more essentials and this place would rock; maybe the current renovation will help. I'm ranking at 3.5 stars; round it up to 4 only for the view and the pool."
