"We stayed in Sámara for 3 nights during our 8 days in Costa Rica in May 2016. Sherry was prompt and helpful with her emails prior to our stay. Upon arrival, Larry was welcoming and walked us around to orient us and answered any of our questions. It was dusk when we arrived and it wasn’t until the next morning (in the sunlight) we realized a few screens were bent just enough to allow bugs in. Best rule of thumb we found: once it was dark enough to need a light on inside (as few as possible so as not to attract more bugs!), we closed the windows and turned on the A/C in the bedroom. We had so few bugs that way, they weren’t bothersome (which is great for Costa Rica). The bedroom cooled quickly enough with the A/C to sleep comfortably. The WiFi worked well for us the entire stay.
The villa is setup as a duplex (one building split into two separate houses, sharing an interior wall). Larry & Sherry live in the other part of the building. In this case, the kitchen/living room wall was the only shared wall (with a door we could knock on if we needed them). So you don’t have to worry about sound traveling from the bedroom and bathroom, etc. We heard very little of our hosts when we were there. When on our balcony, we could see their balcony and the pool area but never saw them out there. I got the feeling they intentionally made themselves scarce to give us our privacy and run of the property. A few times, as we pulled into the driveway, Larry would come to his front door to ask if everything was going well and if we needed anything. They seemed approachable and willing to visit or answer questions but took their cues from their guests (in our case, we enjoyed the solitude and privacy). When relaxing on the beautiful balcony overlooking the bay, I was grateful to have this quiet little sanctuary, away from the town of Samara and the road, where we would have heard music, people and motorbikes.
We had a rental car, so this property worked great for us. The beach was a 15-20 minute walk/5 min drive. When deciding if you need a rental car, think of how often you walk at home. If you regularly walk to work, stores or restaurants, the walk to the beach should be okay for you (coming back is uphill, so you might opt for the $4 taxi). If you drive everywhere at home, this may not be the place to stay for you without a rental car. The quietness and serenity were higher priorities to us than being steps from the beach. I can’t imagine staying anywhere else in Samara."
