  • Fair with Flair

"I read the review complaining about missing pool tiles, and I have been thinking about what constitutes value in a vacation rental. I guess value occurs when reality meets expectations. My wife and I stayed at Cocobolo for eight nights in March, followed two weeks later by four days in Cancun. In such places as Maui and Cancun, the native people, plants and wildlife have been eradicated to make room for wall-to-wall hotels, each with its own private chunk of beach, a pool and a place to get drunk while being catered to by white-jacketed servants. If this is your idea of heaven, then by all means go to Maui. We found Trey helpful and friendly, attentive and supportive. He did not, however, make our drinks. Cocobolo is "in amongst 'em." The roads are terrible and dusty, but Cocobolo gets much less dust than does anyplace six miles away in Santa Teresa. We enjoyed buying local fish and produce in S.T. and Cobano, and picked up our de rigeur souvenir machete at the hardware store in Cobano. Trey took us fishing one day, and we drove the Pacific Coastal Highway, i.e. the beach at low tide, and we hit nearly 60 mph on the smooth, open sand. Of course, we had rented a car. The beaches are extensive and very sparsely populated, despite there being good fishing and a shallow, gradual, sandy slope into the water. I estimate I waded out 100 yards and was no more than waist-high, except when Manzanillo's famous surf came crashing in. Great for beachcombing, suntanning and cloud watching. Monkeys in the trees every day -- both howlers and white-faced. We saw violaceous trogons, cinnamon hummingbirds and other exotic-to-us birds. I don't know if the air conditioning worked, because we never turned it on. Lovely weather throughout. The "missing" screening around the pools was not missing. It was being installed, and the hooks had just been welded to the posts. There is no law against writing a negative review, but I can say we are happy the guests at the other villa were much less dour than our predecessor. Negative: the one thing that caught me off guard was that I expected somebody else's vacation house that was being let for weeks for income. Trey has three or four (didn't count 'em, and they are scattered) on the property. Would we go back? Probably not, but only because our history says we go forward. We had a great time. Thanks, Trey!"

  • Beautiful home in Manuel Antonio away from it all

"My wife, eight year old son and I stayed at Casa Gina from 3/25-3/31/2016 and it is a wonderful home. Situated atop a high hill in a nice gated community you feel secluded, but you're only 2 minutes away from restaurants, sights and beaches. The home is well appointed, very clean and large enough to accommodate 6 very comfortably. You have all the comforts of home with washer/dryer, full kitchen with dishwasher, BBQ, pool, safe and alarm. They have an always hot hot water system that some complained about, and at first we agreed until we figured out to keep the handles about middle and the water will stay a pretty constant warm...otherwise you will cycle between extreme heat and then cold water. My one complaint is the wifi, it is very slow and only allows for checking email, sending text messages (no pictures in those) and maybe doing some light web browsing, but don't expect pages to load quickly. Also, don't expect to stream anything either, it was enough for what we needed, but had hoped for a slightly faster connection. You can expect to see sloths, monkeys, iguanas and lots of birds in the back yard, which was nice when we'd relax at the pool. Tip, if you are going to do any tours of any kind, they will usually pick you up right from the house or at least the front gate of the community saving you from having to find places there, which is not always easy since many streets don't have signs in CR. Take the ATV tour to Rainmaker, its a great area and has a local brewery there serving fantastic beer. Gary and Gina were very easy to work with and Jeannette and Carlos (the local contacts in Costa Rica) were great. We would definitely go back again and recommend this place to anyone!!"

  • Perfection!!!

"My wife and I celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary trip at Casa Sandra for eight glorious days, and we couldn't have asked for a better "home" or a better location! From the day we arrived until the day we left, we loved every inch of this property. Since 4-6 could stay here very comfortably, the 2 of us had more than enough space. And a balcony on each floor---facing" the "Jungle" or the Pacific Ocean---is it even necessary to choose an adjective on how great that is?!! Casa Sandra is located in the heart of Manuel Antonio, a couple miles from the town of Quepos, and a couple miles from the famous and popular Manuel Antonio Park. It's within walking distance of grocery stores and many nice restaurants (go to Victoria's and ask for Oscar, trust me). The home is very clean--and there is maid service and laundry service. We always felt safe, including walking at night. And speaking of safe, there's one in the home so one can lock their passports and valuables. We saw monkeys almost daily, and many interesting birds. And the sunsets alone are worth renting this home---better than we saw anywhere else all week. The folks we communicated with before and during our stay here were wonderful--patient, kind, helpful, and easy to get ahold of. We sent many emails beforehand, and a couple calls to ask about things during our stay--and always received a quick response. We wanted to be busy almost every morning, so we told Thomas and Angie what we were interested in, and they set up everything---inhouse massage (excellent), Manuel Antonio Park tour (take a guide---very well worth it, very necessary, and Henry is great!), a Sunset Sail (5 hours of FUN), a Mangrove Tour (educational--and more monkeys!), a Villa Vanilla Spice Tour (again, educational and very interesting), ZipLine (first time for us, and it was incredible!). That including us getting picked up and dropped off at our door for all of these as well! We originally thought we would rent a car all week, but decided to get the van ride from the airport in San Jose to Casa Sandra instead. It was a good decision. Easy to walk almost everywhere, and easy to jump on and off a bus just down the road, which we did often. We did rent a car for 2 days (yes, again, all we had to do was ask the team of Thomas/Angie to take care of this---and they did, dropped off and picked up at our front door!!). We can't say enough about how pleased we were with our accomodations, and the A+/excellent service we received."

  • Quiet, peaceful, perfect for 2 couples

"This house is in a beautiful secluded spot that is very quiet and peaceful. It's also bigger than it looks in the pictures, and is laid out perfectly for 2 couples. There are essentially 2 master suites, each approximately the same size with its own large bathroom, and a living room and kitchen in the middle. We did not use the kitchen, but it looked to be fairly well equipped if you'd like to cook your own meals. Arvin, who was managing the house, was perfect. He was willing to do as much or as little as you wanted - anything from just offering a few suggestions for restaurants by email to setting up tours with "monkeys sitting on your head if you want". Couldn't have asked for anyone more accommodating! I'll also say that this house is located in a gated community with 24 hour security (including one guard who rides around on a motorbike), and when we were there, the house had additional precautions to make sure that sliding glass doors were secure, etc. That was definitely nice to have. One note - our Verizon and AT&T devices worked fine on the ICE network while we were there so we didn't try out the USB stick they had for Internet, but the house does not have WiFi. There is also no cable or satellite television service, but we don't really watch TV much so we didn't really miss it, but then again, we may be unusual since we were there on Super Bowl Sunday and didn't even try to find a place to watch the game.... All in all it's a great place for a quiet, remote getaway, about a 2 hour drive from the San Jose airport."
