  • Beautiful property and exceptional hospitality

"What an incredible month. Everything about our stay at Villa Pochote exceeded our expectations. The Villa itself has been built beautifully (by Trey himself) - clean, spacious, bright with outstanding views from both floors. Great swimming pool, barbecue area and a lovely yoga studio free to use at your leisure with a great teacher who comes every Wednesday at sunset and teaches a class. If you want wildlife you're in the right place too - Iguanas, Howler monkeys, Whiteface monkeys, red squirrels, Coatis, an abundance of birds, the garden is teeming with life and when you sit an wait, it all comes to you. You can walk the the closest beach (Playa Manzanillo) in around 10 minutes but to get anywhere else you'll need a 4x4 or a quad/buggy as the roads are tough work otherwise. And you will definitely want to go everywhere else. So get one. The next beach along is Hermosa where I spent most of my time, great for surfing, beautiful sand, and with a guy who sells coconuts and delicious ceviche out of the back of his van for when you get hungry or thirsty. From there you're on the road to Santa Teresa, a bustling little surf town packed full to the brim with good vibes. There are a number of great bars and restaurants, plenty of surf stores and a few small supermarkets to pick up supplies. All along Santa Teresa are more pristine beaches, usually busy with local and travelling surfers. Further out from Santa Teresa you'll find plenty of nature reserves, other little towns and an abundance of staggering waterfalls (some easier to find than others). The best bit, however, is Trey and Jaclyn. Their hospitality knows no bounds. They gave us lifts to town, surf lessons, the best advice on where to go, they lent me snorkelling gear, Trey flexed his superlative BBQ skills when we all had a cookout, they booked us taxis, Jaclyn took me to the rodeo in Cobano, Trey even took time out of his day taking me around properties that were for sale when I expressed interest. The list very much goes on. Overall we count ourselves lucky to have found such a breathtaking place. If the rest of Costa Rica is as wonderful as the tiny slice we saw then what a country it is. As an unexpected bonus we have also made great friends along the way. We will surely be back. Pura Vida"

  • Amazing...did I mention how Amazing?

"First let me state that I have used many rentals through some sort of Rental by owner website and Daniel is by the far the most helpful, patient and kind owner we have rented from thus far. Though we were not able to meet him (booo, I wanted to thank him in person) he is a fantastic host. Thank you for everything. Now to the Villa, the pictures do not do this place justice. We rented this home to be the location for our 10-year wedding anniversary/vow renewal ceremony and I'm so glad I didn't go with a modern/Hollywood style beach home. This is pure Costa Rican Art/Architecture. We are spending 7 days here (yes still here) and our group( 5 adults) is simply amazed by this home. The pictures cannot show how large and beautiful each bedroom is, the staircase leading to each bedroom is something you would see out of a movie. Each bedroom has a private bath and shower, plus there is one on the lower level by the outdoor shower for when you are spending time by the pool or cooking in the kitchen. I am an avid cook and the kitchen was amazing. I was very impressed with the high quality cuisinart pots and pans with a layer of copper heat distribution. This is a major plus for those who love to cook. The views are amazing from all angles. You fall asleep to the sounds of various birds and awake to the howler monkeys in the distance. You will be visited by iguanas, bats, and insects but don't be discouraged..It's all part of being surrounded by jungle. Please be diligent with the compost bucket and garbage can. His property is beautiful with amazing tropical plants plus a greenhouse and the compost is needed. The hill to the house is beyond steep but we rented ATVs from Pacific Dirt Roads and had no problems going up the driveway in 2nd or 3rd gear. Lola and Carlos are wonderful staff and you will be truly amazed by this home, host, staff, the residential dogs who would followed me everywhere (Ray) especially, and the views. Please book..You will not be disappointed. One last thing, if you are worried about no AC, don't..being on a hill, with massive windows and the fans will keep you cool all night and sleep like a baby. Thank you again Daniel for everything, you and your home are both truly amazing. Pura Vida!!!"

  • Paradise Getaway

"My wife and I wanted to get away from New York for a week and this house was the perfect getaway. It was secluded from the bustle of the main road so the privacy and quiet on the hill was perfect. The house and a huge kitchen (fridge/cutlery/etc) that we could cook in when we wanted to stay in, yet was a short drive to the restaurants we wanted to go to when we felt like dining out. Belen (property manager) was extremely helpful with suggestions of where to go and even gave us a guide before we arrived. About the house? Where to start - the best view you could ever ask for. Perfect infinity pool, lounge chairs to read and drink and actually get away from it all. My wife and I did our own yoga sessions on the deck built (I believe) specifically for it, and there was mats already available which was convenient as we had forgotten ours. Rooms were spacious, clean and comfortable, and there was an awesome living room/common space we used to play cards and lounge when we were tired from surfing. One of the main things we wanted to do was go zip lining and Belen let us know (she emailed quickly by email) that there was a place just down the road and let us know how to get there. The house was perfectly hidden away from the main tourist hub for seclusion, privacy, and a sense of quiet we wanted, yet close enough to all the things we wanted from a Costa Rica trip. We ended up eating at quite a few hotels as they had recommendations of good food/views etc, but the honestly staying at Villa Sunset Hill ended up being the best view and accommodations we saw the entire week. Would highly recommend to both couples and larger groups/family retreats. Thanks again for a great week for my wife's birthday vacation. Pure vida!"

  • Fair with Flair

"I read the review complaining about missing pool tiles, and I have been thinking about what constitutes value in a vacation rental. I guess value occurs when reality meets expectations. My wife and I stayed at Cocobolo for eight nights in March, followed two weeks later by four days in Cancun. In such places as Maui and Cancun, the native people, plants and wildlife have been eradicated to make room for wall-to-wall hotels, each with its own private chunk of beach, a pool and a place to get drunk while being catered to by white-jacketed servants. If this is your idea of heaven, then by all means go to Maui. We found Trey helpful and friendly, attentive and supportive. He did not, however, make our drinks. Cocobolo is "in amongst 'em." The roads are terrible and dusty, but Cocobolo gets much less dust than does anyplace six miles away in Santa Teresa. We enjoyed buying local fish and produce in S.T. and Cobano, and picked up our de rigeur souvenir machete at the hardware store in Cobano. Trey took us fishing one day, and we drove the Pacific Coastal Highway, i.e. the beach at low tide, and we hit nearly 60 mph on the smooth, open sand. Of course, we had rented a car. The beaches are extensive and very sparsely populated, despite there being good fishing and a shallow, gradual, sandy slope into the water. I estimate I waded out 100 yards and was no more than waist-high, except when Manzanillo's famous surf came crashing in. Great for beachcombing, suntanning and cloud watching. Monkeys in the trees every day -- both howlers and white-faced. We saw violaceous trogons, cinnamon hummingbirds and other exotic-to-us birds. I don't know if the air conditioning worked, because we never turned it on. Lovely weather throughout. The "missing" screening around the pools was not missing. It was being installed, and the hooks had just been welded to the posts. There is no law against writing a negative review, but I can say we are happy the guests at the other villa were much less dour than our predecessor. Negative: the one thing that caught me off guard was that I expected somebody else's vacation house that was being let for weeks for income. Trey has three or four (didn't count 'em, and they are scattered) on the property. Would we go back? Probably not, but only because our history says we go forward. We had a great time. Thanks, Trey!"
