  • Beautiful Home, Lovely View

"This is beautiful home with a lovely view and lovely landscaping. Waking to the sounds of the jungle was amazing and we had monkeys in our trees which thrilled us! The top terrace is a wonderful place to relax. The location is nice if you want to avoid the business of the coast but it is about a 30 minute drive to Santa Teresa and while there are two restaurants nearby, the best places to eat are in Santa Teresa in our opinion. The description and reviews mention the friendly gardener, housekeeper and laundry service but it seems as if they were let go before our arrival. There was a new caretaker, who was a bit of a curmudgeon (but he did prepare us a nice dessert one afternoon), and said the laundry machine would ruin our clothes; once we discovered the laundry machines were actually in a locked room in the house, we were able to do our own laundry. Also beware that the house has no AC and while most of the time the house is pleasant especially if it rains in the evening, on evenings that it did not rain, the bedrooms were a bit warm, stagnant and with the windows open, bugs (and a bat) did come in the room at night making us feel a little uncomfortable. Also some of the things that make this house special and add luxury were not up to par (because of a lack of rain?) such as the infinity pool which was still useable and nice but not filled to infinity level, fountains which were not running and the shower in the master bath which did not work. Seems to us like this home is a bit of a fading beauty. Bill responded promptly with emails but we never met him."

  • Paradise

"We visited the Santa Teresa/Mal Pais/Monteverde area for three weeks and this was our favorite place. If we did it over again, we would have stayed with Yan the entire time and if we ever go back, we will rent this house for a month. The other reviews wrote in detail about how beautiful the setting and house are--we agree with those sentiments 100%. Stop checking out other places--rent this house and you will not be sorry. I wish I had known when planning our trip how much better it is for a family to stay in Mal Pais over Santa Teresa. Mal Pais has a much better vibe. Thank you Yan for everything and we will most certainly be back to the March House."

  • Heaven on Earth

"The word paradise only touches on describing this magical place. This breezy house of mahogany, awash with the scent of tropical flowers, this is the stuff dreams are made of. The abundant sunshine, the private beach just steps away, the chatter of wild parakeets that wake you in the morning, the breathtaking sunsets to wish you a goodnight, the magnificent tropical storms, the overwhelming sense of peace. All this and so much more make this place a true heaven on earth. I stayed for two weeks with my 6 year old son. It was an enchanted journey that we’ll never forget. Alex and Mary were the most gracious of hosts who went over and above to make our stay unforgettable. I can’t recommend this beautiful beach house (or these people) more. This was not a vacation for us but rather a new family tradition!"

  • Beautiful property and exceptional hospitality

"What an incredible month. Everything about our stay at Villa Pochote exceeded our expectations. The Villa itself has been built beautifully (by Trey himself) - clean, spacious, bright with outstanding views from both floors. Great swimming pool, barbecue area and a lovely yoga studio free to use at your leisure with a great teacher who comes every Wednesday at sunset and teaches a class. If you want wildlife you're in the right place too - Iguanas, Howler monkeys, Whiteface monkeys, red squirrels, Coatis, an abundance of birds, the garden is teeming with life and when you sit an wait, it all comes to you. You can walk the the closest beach (Playa Manzanillo) in around 10 minutes but to get anywhere else you'll need a 4x4 or a quad/buggy as the roads are tough work otherwise. And you will definitely want to go everywhere else. So get one. The next beach along is Hermosa where I spent most of my time, great for surfing, beautiful sand, and with a guy who sells coconuts and delicious ceviche out of the back of his van for when you get hungry or thirsty. From there you're on the road to Santa Teresa, a bustling little surf town packed full to the brim with good vibes. There are a number of great bars and restaurants, plenty of surf stores and a few small supermarkets to pick up supplies. All along Santa Teresa are more pristine beaches, usually busy with local and travelling surfers. Further out from Santa Teresa you'll find plenty of nature reserves, other little towns and an abundance of staggering waterfalls (some easier to find than others). The best bit, however, is Trey and Jaclyn. Their hospitality knows no bounds. They gave us lifts to town, surf lessons, the best advice on where to go, they lent me snorkelling gear, Trey flexed his superlative BBQ skills when we all had a cookout, they booked us taxis, Jaclyn took me to the rodeo in Cobano, Trey even took time out of his day taking me around properties that were for sale when I expressed interest. The list very much goes on. Overall we count ourselves lucky to have found such a breathtaking place. If the rest of Costa Rica is as wonderful as the tiny slice we saw then what a country it is. As an unexpected bonus we have also made great friends along the way. We will surely be back. Pura Vida"
