  • A Spring Break to Remember - Where the Jungle meets the Sea

"My 12 year old son and I and another family of 4 (2 boys aged 12 and 9) had the most wonderful vacation at this house this past Spring Break. The house is spacious and comfortable, perched high above a wild stretch of Pacific coast. It feels luxurious in an authentic Costa Rican way. It's hard to know where to start. We packed a lot into each day and yet felt totally relaxed and rested when we got home. We hired a wonderful local guide, Nito, to hike both on and near this property and in Corcovado. He made our trip. Not only did we see a lot more than we would have without him, he had a vast knowledge of the ecology of the area and the kids and adults learned a lot. He has also perfected the art of taking a photo with an iPhone 6 through the lens of his swarovsky telescope. I have great photos! Things I recommend: Get up before dawn to catch sunrise and animals on the beach; take a glass of wine down to the beach at sunset (this is NOT a swimming beach. It is beautiful and wild and very powerful so always watch the kids); ask Grace to cook local dishes; ask Juan to take you on a night hike (we had an encounter with a Fer-de-lance that the kids will remember for life ;=); hire a local fisherman to take you out on Golfo Dulce to fish and get up close and personal with dolphins, go to the nearby eco lodges and enjoy cocktails and wifi once or twice, go zip lining through the forest; visit a coco plantation; sleep with the doors and windows wide open to hear the ocean and the wildlife; if you have kids or even if you don't, keep a list each day of all the birds and animals that you see and if you can't identify something look it up in the books at the house each evening. The boys really got into to doing this and argued over who was going to write them all in the owner's book to record wildlife sightings. I could go on and on. This was the perfect vacation. Family, friends, adventure, comfort, amazing wildlife and unspoiled beauty. The owner of this property was extremely helpful and his tips and advice contributed greatly to the success of our vacation. The Osa Peninsular is a very special place. My son and I can't wait to go back."

  • Even better than the last time

"April 2016 was the third time I have stayed at Paraiso de Miguel. Each time it gets even better than the last time. The landscape is meticulously maintained and the trees and fruits on the property continue to mature... it truly is a beautiful place to kick off your flip flops and relax in one of the multiple hammocks outside overlooking the Golfo Dulce. Mike and Liz are exactly the kind of hosts you want when on vacation in a remote tropical paradise. They have a very laid back vibe but are very accessible and attentive to your needs. They are very knowledgeable about the area and well known and liked in the local community. The new addition of the pizza oven/grilling complex/happy hour bar was a smash hit. After cooling off in the outdoor rain shower (which I love so much I have never once used the nice shower in the bathroom!) we hit the pizza bar where Mike chopped open some coconuts that we used as mixer while watching the sunset and creating our own individual pizzas (delicious home made sauce by Lizzy to boot... highly recommend a pizza night). Are you kidding me? You can keep the hotels... this is my kind of place. There are so many places in the world I want to see and experience but Paraiso de Miguel makes it a really tough decision to go anywhere else. My kids are now at the age where I think they would really enjoy the experience as well... hikes to waterfalls, surfing one of the longest waves in the world, boat trip through the mangroves, monkeys in the trees outside the window, Scarlett McCaws and Toucans flying around. If you want to get away from it all and truly experience Costa Rica in a remote jungle paradise (getting there is indeed part of the adventure!), yet have all the modern conveniences with amazing hosts then this is it. See you guys again soon but with the family next time! -Smed"

  • Fantastic Home, GREAT for a Family Getaway

"It's hard to find a place that accommodates a large family (we're a family of 7). This home was more than enough space! Scott and Maria took great care of us! Wildlife was amazing, got a daily show, compliments of the Macaws and several types of monkeys. Very comfortable and a quick 15 minute drive to the surf. Lots of 'stuff' to make your stay easy and good cell reception (for better of worse!!). Overall fantastic stay, looking forward to our return!"

  • Magic on the Osa Peninsula

"We loved our time at Casa Sonrisa! Because this particular house sits back a bit on the hill, I think we saw even more wildlife than those closer to the beach although the view of the Golfo Dulce was beautiful too. Case Sonrisa backs up to an area that could almost be considered a monkey playground! We saw 4 types of monkeys and were given an especially funny show by the spider monkeys! The house was very comfortable and we were thankful that William was able to provide an extra mattress and mosquito net for one of our kids. The kitchen was beautifully outfitted with everything needed for a 4 day stay. I am glad that we shopped in town and brought so much food with us from Pavones because the road to Puerto Jimenez was awful and I wouldn't have wanted to drive it any more than needed. The thunder and lightening storms were amazing to watch from the open area living space! We surfed morning and evening sessions and loved that we could just walk to Playa Pan Dulce and then follow trails to other breaks. I got some of my favorite surfing pictures of our whole time in Costa Rica one evening. The houses are fit with radios that can contact the owners, William and several of the local restaurants. This came in especially handy when one of our kids left his insulin pack at Lapa Rios. We were able to call around and locate the pack and then go pick it up right away! We will definitely come back and stay again!"
