  • Fantastic introduction to authentic Costa Rica

"This was our 1st visit to Costa Rica and the 1st stop of our trip. Our group of 5 adults and 2 children had lots of room in this unique home and although, sadly, Ken, was not at home at the time, his brother in law Alexander could not have done more to make us feel welcome and comfortable. He helped us settle in, even to the extent of food shopping for us before we arrived. He shared his fresh brewed coffee with us, took us on a tour of both the farm (where he grew up) and the coffee processing coop, and shared local suggestions for meals and tours. The pride that both he and Ken have for this place was so evident. Guests to Casa Zabala might find it a challenge to prepare most of their meals there but there are plentiful excellent sodas and other restaurants nearby. We cooked all our breakfasts there and ate out for the other meals. In particular, there is a family restaurant within walking distance, Finca Bosque Verde, which served excellent food at what we thought was a very reasonable price and also displayed what we quickly learned was typical Costa Rican hospitality. We were even treated to a tour of the family farm and saw how they process sugar cane. Much of the food prepared in the restaurant is grown on site. We also found that eating out was possibly more economical for our family than buying food in the local grocery stores. We were up early every morning, by 6 am, to enjoy the abundant bird life right outside our windows, attracted by all the beautiful flowering plants and other vegetation. We loved eating fresh bananas, oranges, limes and grapefruit grown on the farm. Would we recommend this VRBO? Oh yes, for sure. Yes, it is 'rustic' but that is not a negative. It is comfortable, clean and, we think, gave us an a wonderful introduction to Costa Rica. As for tours: we didn't book any before we arrived. Alexander sent us to Pension Santa Elena and we were given excellent recommendations for the acitivities we were interested in and they booked the reservations for us!"

  • What a fun home!

"My party of nine arrived in the middle of a rainstorm which made us a bit late but Sabine was patiently waiting to greet us. She made us fell welcome with a tour of the house and offers to book any of the adventures we chose. The home itself is one of the most interesting we've ever rented. I was a little worried about the outdoor stairways with the storm but they're all under cover and we kept dry. We used the top level for gathering and games and the rest for sleeping and privacy. The middle level deck was perfect for morning coffee. Definitely quirky, cute, and well located. We had a blast!"

  • Fantastic spot!

"We recently got home from a trip to Costa Rica, and the Casa de Amigos was by far our favorite place to have stayed. I highly recommend it. The house itself is in a nice location - it's right near Santa Elena, which is a jumping off point for all sorts of activities and adventures. There are also loads of restaurants and a decent super there. The house is beautiful and extremely well maintained. The caretakers are doing a great job - Ken and co., you are very fortunate to have Guillermo and Evelyn for friends and employees. Everything was clean and well stocked. The house was spacious for our family of 6 (we're two adults and four smallish kids). Our kids loved that the caretakers have a little dog. I loved the delicious bakery smells coming from their home - and the cake sample that Evelyn brought over! The kitchen was well appointed and easy to cook in, which for our family saved a lot of money. The cloud forest is amazing - don't pass up an opportunity to hike here! We enjoyed the hanging bridges tour, and the ziplines were definitely a highlight. Heading into the trip, I didn't think we'd get to zip as our girls are all smallish (between 40 and 60 lbs), but Evelyn called and found that we could indeed zip. So fun. And surprisingly un-scary, even for our 4, 6, 9 and 11 year old kids. I only wished we had more time to spend in Monteverde."
