  • Secluded, stunning and COMFORTABLE

"This is a beautiful home in a private and stunning setting. The road to the house is quite a trek up and as the other renter stated, a 4 wheel drive is pretty much a must, but that is a good idea no matter where you stay in Costa Rica. The roads go OVER mountains not between them. The pool was amazing and perfect to end a hot day of touring, we saw 2 scarlet macaws while soaking in the pool one evening, something you can only see in this area and one other as the macaw only live in a couple of the preserves in Costa Rica, and one happens to be surrounding this home!! The whole house has AC, which is nice for those of us not used to the heat. The house is a bit of a drive from the airports but it is a spectacular drive to say the least. Lots of amazing hikes, waterfalls, croc tours and great food right nearby. Patri was very attentive to our needs, set us up on last minute tours with a private guide who was AMAZING. He spotted a 3 toed sloth and we got some great pics of the scarlet macaw here. He used our phones to get a pic with his telescope, he was so knowledgeable about the area, the flora and fauna. There was a water issue while we were there but it was resolved quickly and it is not a normal occurrence (the pool operator forgot to shut off a valve). We plan to come back to this house with our kids next time. My only suggestion for the owner, is actually the same as the last review. A couple of loungers by the pool or a hammock would be awesome. Maybe some bird feeders as well? I LOVED looking at the many different birds!! ALSO, be sure to go up the hill about 20 minutes. Drive past the town of Bijagual at the top of the hill (maybe another 5-10 minutes), into a much smaller town called Lajas. There is a soda here with amazing food! Homemade tortillas, a little sugar cane press with sugar cane and a tarzan swing!!"

  • comfortably appointed

"the upstairs of the casa is new & quite nice. the downstairs is ok. we found everything we needed to be comfortable already there for us. the kitchen was well equipped. nice linens, bath & beach towels. the house is in a little neighborhood. it was surprisingly quiet:) the road to the house is pretty typically costa rican. a 4 wheel drive vehicle would be recommended. the only thing we would have liked to have seen on the property that we didn't -- more flowers planted to attract hummingbirds and other birds."

  • Relaxing retreat in the trees.

"Unicorn is a beautiful rustic house with some stylish details. The large windows give wonderful views of the surrounding forest. WiFi worked great to communicate with family back home, etc. Enjoyed the fireplace in the evening. The local helper, Emi, is a very sweet woman. Thankfully we speak some Spanish. Only disappointment was the onsite birding compared to other places in the San Gerardo de Dota area....while we were here."
