  • Paradise in the jungle!

"In the words of Axle Rose, "Welcome to the jungle!" Except the only screaming we heard was from the howler monkeys that came right up to the back balcony of the house and "hung out" with us over dinner (this seriously happened on night three)! Our two young girls (ages 5 and 7) were overjoyed when the monkeys just watched us as they munched on leaves and crashed around on the branches! This place may be in the jungle, but it's an idyllic getaway for young families, or couples. We were a short walk to the common pool (100 yards away) where our kids loved to swim while overlooking the jungle canopy down the hillside! Don't believe the exaggerated reviews of the bugs in the pool. We were staying there a couple weeks later than one reviewer and had a blast in the pool. The ground-keeping guy was excellent and cleaned the pool every day (despite bugs in the jungle, it was super-clean)! The pool is long enough for some laps, while the kids were able to work on their swimming skills (the deepest part is only four feet)! In general, we were so impressed with how clean and well-maintained the grounds were. The house itself is gorgeous! The design is incredibly well adapted to the environment in which it's situated. Coming to Nicaragua from a cooler North American climate, we were expecting to be hot at night in a place that doesn't have air conditioning (the house is made up of an open screen system). However, much to our surprise, the cool evening breezes combined with some well placed fans kept us very comfortable each evening! The fully-functional kitchen was excellent, and we were able to make use of the bbq to grill fresh seafood we bought from the SJDS fish market! Each evening we ate while watching the beautiful Nicaraguan sun set on the ocean horizon below the jungle-covered mountains! The beach was a short drive away, but go at low tide. The Balcones property manager, Gabby, was so helpful when we arrived and frequently checked in on us! She warned us that sometimes we might see scorpions or tarantulas in the house, but we quickly realized that the reason for this is they are often looking for an open door. We just made sure the sliding doors were closed and we never had anything to worry about! Don't get me wrong, you'll see these cool creatures around the property (after all, you are in the jungle baby!), but there's nothing to worry about! The most interesting insect we saw in the house was a six-inch long Praying Mantis on the bug net. Cool!"

  • Can't get any better

"The location is great, the rooms are great, the pictures don't do the spaciousness justice. It is bright and very open. A horse back ride on Kieth's ranch should be mandatory-the horses are gentle and sure-footed. Our hosts are gracious and helpful, they treat you like old friends. The staff are great and friendly. The two k. Beach is across the road. The only thingwrongwiththis is my poor Spanish. We are halfway through our two week stay and definitely thinking seriously about returning next year-all eight of us"

  • Overall - a good vacation!

"Overall, we loved our time in SJDS. The house is in a good location, just a short ride outside of town (we had rented a 4 wheel drive pickup - which I'd recommend). It was a good size for our family of 5, and we really enjoyed the pool and relaxing in the hammocks. The house is also near very nice beaches and local zip line attractions. There were a few things we were surprised by, but they weren't really the fault of the house. For example, we were without power in the house almost every night. It wasn't related to the house, but it would have been nice to know that this happens. Not only is it quite hot at night, but the air conditioners in the bedrooms also help to mask the dogs barking, roosters crowing, or horns honking. I don't know if power outages occur that regularly, but they did the week we were there (one for about 11 hours). A suggestion we'd give would be to provide a cell phone and internet service for an additional fee. A cell phone is provided upon arrival, but it worked sporadically (and ultimately not at all) and I ended up using my own in order to get a hold of the property manager. Internet is also provided, but it requires a trip into town in order to provide a router number, purchase airtime, etc. We tried on a couple of different occasions, but were never successful in getting wifi. Again, not the end of the world (it was actually nice to be disconnected) - just a suggestion that we'd have been willing to pay more to have this set up. Also, there is a care taker on site which can throw you off a bit at first, but we really appreciated having him there. He was very nice, very helpful, and we appreciated his service. Overall, we really enjoyed staying here. It was a very private location, a nice house, and and it provided our family with a vacation we are sure to not forget. We would definitely consider staying here again if we visit SJDS in the future."

  • Exceed Expectations!

"Casa Culebra served as the perfect setting for our worry-free girls’ getaway! The house offered just the right amount of relaxation, adventure, and luxury. For those of you wondering…yes, the pictures are on point when it comes to the clean and comfortable accommodations you expect to see upon arrival. However, keep in mind what you can’t see that takes the experience to a whole new level. The sunrise and sunset views from this house (and throughout the property) were breathtaking, and the infinity pool quickly became part of our sunset ritual. Elisha, our concierge, truly served as our Ambassador! She was beyond helpful when it came to booking excursions or simply offering ‘life in Nica’ advice. This gave us the feeling of being on vacation, but also gave us a little taste of the local scene. We enjoyed 2 evenings in with Chef Adam, which I highly recommend….not only was he a whiz in the kitchen, but he offered comedic commentary in between courses. We also took advantage of surf lessons with Baldo (he should get an award for patience), which was an incredible experience….especially for those of us that surfed for the first time and GOT UP! Last and certainly not least, the groundkeepers and security of the property were very attentive. It was comforting to know that if and when we needed something, they were nearby and promptly provided assistance. I highly recommend a stay at Casa Culebra, and can say without a doubt, that I am looking forward to a return visit in the (hopefully near) future."
