  • Excellent accommodation and pool in wonderful area

"When did you last meet an octogenarian with the joie de vivre of a small boy, in the best way possible? Mauro, owner of Il Bagnolino, is just such a character and his buoyant Italian personality is reflected - even symbolised by - the hilltop house and garden that he has lovingly attended for decades. The interior of the house is full of charm, especially the spacious dining room, which once housed animals during the winters and retains original features - an ancient, wall-length wooden hay trough - alongside a beautiful table easily seating twelve or more. On a hot Tuscan summer's day, the thick stone walls and traditional shutters provide a cool indoor retreat, and great care has been taken to furnish the bedrooms in traditional Italian style and comfort. Everything was spotless. Il Bagnolino's swimming pool allows breathtaking views over the Tuscan hills to one side, and Mauro's orchard to the other. The height of the house, and its generous wooded surround, means that you really do feel as if you are on top of the world. We sang a lot outside - it's that kind of place! The pool is safely fenced and the gate access is secure for guests with children. Wide steps built into the pool also helped our youngest children. We took five children, and there was plenty to occupy all ages. Other highlights included wood-fired BBQs and evening trips down the track to Anghiari for huge pizzas. Don't let the slightly bumpy ride up to the house put you off - taking your time is part of acclimatizing to the slower, holiday pace of life at the top, and you can spot a variety of wildlife, including just about everything encountered by the Gruffalo, by taking your time. Dusk is best, just perfect post-pizza. There is much to see in friendly Anghiari and in other nearby towns. You can go to museums or just experience the many ways in which its old ways permeate its modern life; Anghiari itself lives its history, so much is preserved along its narrow streets - we particularly loved its wooden doors. Tracey Lega, the agent for the house, is extremely personable and adds to your experience hugely with the wealth of knowledge she has of the local culture. Nothing is too much trouble, and, deliciously, she speaks perfect English, too! Go there, if you ever get the chance!"

[English translation courtesy of Easy Reserve] The apartment was good, nicely decorated perfect. Disappointing: You write it has its own terrace and private garden, neither were there, no garden furniture and no private garden. Everything else was perfect. PS: if you had written this on the website, we probably would not have booked. [Counter comment from the owner] To explain better: the outdoor area is exactly like you can see on the pictures - there is a bench, a small table and 2 sun chairs. The outdoor area is right in front of the apartment but however it is not a private space, the apartment is situated in a small hamlet."

  • Review for stay from 13 August 2016 to 20 August 2016

"We stayed a week at Villa Celeste in August 2016 when it was very hot. We were an extended family group of 12 and the villa was perfect for us. The accommodation is very flexible, with plenty of private space if you need it, though we only used one of the kitchens and ate outside all week. We kept the interior cool with the shutters closed which meant it was a little dark, but we were outside most of the time so it didn't matter. The beds are comfortable and the linen good. There are towels provided, but you need to bring your own pool towels. The bathrooms are modern and all but one have a full size shower. The kitchen is well equipped although you have to hunt through many cupboards to find everything. It is the exterior that is the true star of this villa. The pool area is fantastic with plenty of seating, tables and shade for everyone. The pictures are little out of date, the trees are bigger now and offer great shade over the table for wonderful mealtimes together. We used the pizza oven and had a great night. The owners are very friendly and welcoming and are close by if you need any help. We visited Cortona, which is above on the hillside, Perugia, Montepulciano and other lovely towns within a 45 minute drive. We did also walk to Camucia on market day, the main road is a bit busy, but mostly has a pavement alongside. It would have been helpful to have a folder of local information in the villa. There was one with a booklet about wine and cheese tasting, so it's best to do your research before you go and there is WiFi in the property. All of us thought it was a fabulous place to stay and would go back again."
