Magical (with the right expectations)

5 of 5
My wife, myself and my two young daughters (6 and 3) stayed here for a month. We absolutely loved it and would love to stay in this exact spot again some day. However, we knew ahead of time what we wanted and I feel it's helpful to describe to other potential guests what to expect. The cottage is located in a hillside "village". The village is really more like a neighborhood. Maybe 50 homes and about 10-15 minute drive (depending on your bravery and driving ability) down a narrow twisty mountain road to the nearest small town where there is a grocery store (Simply Market) and a few restaurants (and a great gelato place: Sylvia's). There are other cottages attached to this cottage and next door. However, the way it is situated when you sit int the backyard you do have a lot of peace and quiet. We loved walking the cobblestone street to take out the trash and saying hello to our neighbors (mostly older Italian men and women). The view and solitude were amazing. It was magical to wake up and throw up open the windows and look over the village (with bright flowers in bloom, terra cotta roofs and a church bell tower peaking up in the distance). Then we'd go downstairs open the windows, cook breakfast and eat outside staring at the surrounding steep hills covered with trees. Later we'd sit in the shade of the olive trees and read. But you are about 30-40 minutes from the nearest big town: Lucca. About 1 hour from Pisa and about 1.5 hours from Florence. If you want do a bunch of sight seeing this is not your place. If you want to relax in the Italian country side and do hiking (there are several hikes nearby, and the drive itself is wonderful) this is a great place. You'll need to cook your own meals unless you love driving. My older daughter is allergic to mosquitoes so we try to be extra careful. Unfortunately they are really attracted to her. She probably got bit 40-50 times while we there despite our precautions. However I only got a bit a single time during the month. There is mosquito repellant provided. The cottage also does heat up. We were sweating at night (but didn't open the windows at night because of the mosquitoes). However, with same fans and some cool showers before bed we managed. We are an easy going family and this wouldn't prevent us from going back, but if you are really sensitive to heat or are only used to air conditioning this might not work for you. We loved this place and exceeded all our expectations.

Great family vacation

4 of 5
We were a group of nine aged 14-67, and we had a great week in this wonderful house with an amazing location and a very cozy feeling to it. Helpful assistance from Gina on arrival, and the few times we needed assistance, it was swift and efficient. Very well equipped kitchen with all you could wish for, except the dish washer probably needs replacement. It was difficult to get things properly clean. We really enjoyed the pool, the terrasse, the pingpong table and the fabulous views of the mountains. Would recommend future visitors to take the new road through the village, arriving from the pool side. In stead of the left down hill road at the last three-way split in the description, take the road to the right and follow it all the way to the end - and you are at the pool. Better road - and better parking facilities. The stairs around the house are somewhat challenging. Too challenging probably for toddlers and elderly people in poor shape. But hey - who couldn't do with a bit of exercise? A perfect location for our family vacation.
