  • Enchanting

"This enchanting house is right out of a D.H. Lawrence novel. It's tucked on a tiny quiet road; a mossy stone marker inscribed 1892 greets you as you approach along the gravel drive. The garden hosts majestic chestnut and cypress trees, with an arched tunnel of wisteria. Inhale the fragrance of lemon and olive trees or wander down the winding path lined with bamboo that leads to an very large private swimming pool nestled in a little valley. Swim and sunbathe in total privacy while across the valley you can glimpse a gorgeous old Tuscan chapel. The grounds of this property are delightful (mosquitos were a non-issue on my visit) and I recommend any guest take advantage of them. Inside the house, admire the Carrara marble sink and matching kitchen table, and the elegant tile. Enjoy the incredible craftsmanship of the generous original windows. During our visit, I slept with them open each night to enjoy the August breezes and the songs of crickets. So peaceful! Don’t expect electronically operated shutters or a TV in every room; this is not a high-tech house. But it has all the important comforts and amenities, such as a strong and reliable WiFi, and a wonderfully equipped kitchen for cooking and gathering with friends. If you're looking for the tranquility of the countryside, a spacious romantic garden in which to relax, socialize, and have your meals, and the genuine glamour of days gone by, don't miss this beautiful home."

  • Italian country home

"Set amid the Tuscan hillside with views of vineyards, olive groves, local cyclists whooshing by, and livestock (wild boars, which we heard about but never saw), this large home is relaxing and centrally located for touring Lucca, if you have a car. Our hosts were generous and informative without being intrusive. The lower floor of the house (the original wine cellar) is for a second set of guests who arrived the day after we did. We did not crave privacy and enjoyed our downstairs neighbors whom we shared a very fun winemaking tour with at the winery across the lane (set up by our hosts). House and surrounding outdoor areas were very clean and well-maintained. Kitchen fully stocked and in good working order. Extra charges for heat and wifi. Great value. Arrival bottle of wine and cookies were a welcoming touch."

  • Relaxing hidden retreat.

"This cottage more than lived up to its description and exceeded our expectations - space, comfort, decor, ready supply of maps and books and other homely touches etc etc. We loved it. The cottage is located in a hillside hamlet and has fantastic views. It has lots of different areas to sit in (inside and out) so its easy to enjoy them. The garden offers a choice of sunny or shady areas to sit in and we found the house nice and cool to retreat back to after a day's sightseeing in the heat. The local Italian family who look after the property were warm, welcoming and generous. They live nearby so were on hand if needed but left us in complete privacy so we were able to totally relax. Indeed, this is a great place to escape the rat race and unwind. Bagni di Lucca, the local town, has supermarkets, shops and a small number of bars and restaurants. It also has a great swimming pool complex and wild swimmers may enjoy going a couple of miles upstream on the river that runs through the town. We enjoyed exploring nearby hilltop villages and also Lucca and Montacatini Terme which are less than an hour's drive away. We intended going to Pisa and the coast but ran out of time. We noticed that there is a train service from one of the other nearby towns which we will investigate next time. All in all this was just our cup of tea!"
