  • Clean and exactly as billed.

"Great location. Very reponsive and helpful host. Lack of air conditioning was not a problem with cool night breeze and windows open. Three floors of narrow winding stairs could be difficult for the less agile"

  • Lovely house in great location

"This charming house has been renovated to a high standard and is very comfortably furnished. It's within a few minutes level walk of shops and restaurants which made it an ideal location for us but wouldn't be suitable for those looking for a quiet and peaceful stay as there is quite a lot of noise from traffic....I guess you can't have it both ways! The pool is a good size and the gardens are well maintained and have plenty of furniture that can be moved round to catch the sun all day long. There's also a nice covered outdoor eating area and a BBQ. We were three couples who like to eat out a lot and wander round pretty towns and lanes without always being tied to a car - we had a wonderful week here and really enjoyed staying in the villa and in Vence. However, with only two bathrooms, one of which is ensuite, plus only three proper bedrooms (one room had dividing doors and one room had two beds at opposite ends of the room), I'm not sure it's really suitable for 10 unless you have children you don't mind sharing with! If I had any criticism at all, it would be over the extra charges imposed for cleaning and fees that weren't made clear until the invoice was received. I'm not sure how the cleaning charge can be justified as the house wasn't cleaned at all whilst we were there and we were asked to strip beds, empty bins and make sure garden furniture was placed in original position ourselves at the end of the week. It seems that the charge must be for changeover cleaning, but as the villa was already costing quite a lot, I would have thought this would have been included. And I believe fees should have been paid by home owner, not the guests, as we were paying for staying. Minor complaints."

  • Loving Lucca

"Beautiful setting with very gracious and accommodating hosts. Our cooking lesson was the best experience of our Italy trip! Lella is very skilled and also a great teacher! It was very hands on, not just a demonstration! We felt like friends once we left. Hope to come back one day!"

  • A wonderful stay at Il Rifugio

"My wife and I had a perfect, restorative week at Il Rifugio. John and Bill couldn't be nicer: the beauty of their buildings and grounds reflects the same graciousness they show their guests. The setting in the hills to the south of Lucca has the gentle beauty one expects of the Tuscan countryside, but happily without the crowds, heat, or fuss of summertime Lucca. The croissants (cornetti) that showed up at breakfast everyday (fresh from the bakery up the hill) were better than any I've found in Paris. With the friendly, informal Tre Tigli available for dinner just up another hill from Il Rifugio, we didn't have to budge if we didn't feel like it. We're already looking for an excuse to come back. Our recommendation could not be higher."
