Sun-drenched beaches in Fuerteventura

Just 100 km from the coast of Africa, the sun-drenched Canary Island of Fuerteventura boasts year-round sunshine and some of the biggest and best beaches in the archipelago. The deep dunes of fine sand around the resorts of Corralejo and El Jable on the northern coast draw crowds of travelers, while the long beaches and remote bays of the island's southern tip have a quieter vibe. In local restaurants you can enjoy delicious fish and seafood and try the island's famous Majorero cheeses. Or, head into the rugged interior for exciting hiking and biking adventures – and peaceful unsullied stargazing at the Morro Velosa viewpoint on Tegu Mountain.

Things to do

Explore Fuerteventura's local history

From your Fuerteventura vacation rental, discover more about the island's agricultural history at the Windmill Museum in Antigua. Antigua is also home to the family-friendly Museo del Queso Majorero, a cheese museum that is more fun than you might think. Nearby, in the Betancuria National Park, you can sample some of the island's famous goat's cheese at one of the numerous local producers that dot these hills. While here, history buffs shouldn't skip the opportunity to explore Betancuria's historic colonial center. Here, you'll discover the Museum of Sacred Art, the ancient Franciscan convent at San Buenaventura and the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography.

Activities

Fuerteventura beach fun

With more than 150 beaches fringing the island, visitors can choose from glorious long stretches of white sand and sheltered coves of black volcanic shingle. The stunning beauty of the golden sands at Cofete beach is perfect for a secluded picnic. Surfing is another year-round activity here, thanks to the influence of the summer trade winds and winter swells of the Atlantic. The northern and western beaches are most popular with surfers, especially those at Corralejo. Windsurfing and kitesurfing can be enjoyed around much of the island. And you'll find numerous boats offering whale-watching and dolphin-watching tours departing from harbors around Fuerteventura.

Weather

Year-round sunshine in Fuerteventura

Even in winter, temperatures in the 70s aren't uncommon in Fuerteventura and summer highs reach into the 80s – making Fuerteventura, like the rest of the Canary Islands, a popular winter sun destination. Fall is another great time of year to stay at a Fuerteventura vacation rental. Every October in Gran Tarajal, the island celebrates the repelling of major pirate attacks in 1740 when English privateers tried to loot the town of Tuineje. The islanders' victory is celebrated with a re-enactment and festival. Then, in November, the International Kite Festival brings many colorful kites and surfers to the Corralejo beaches.

Natural features

Exploring beyond Fuerteventura

From your Fuerteventura vacation rental, it's easy to explore Fuerteventura's unique volcanic landscapes on a driving or cycling tour or by hiking some of the island's scenic trails. The tiny neighboring island of Lobos has equally stunning volcanic landscapes, salt marshes, rare flora and fauna and a little lighthouse. Take a boat trip from Corralejo to Lobos Island's serene La Concha beach where you may spot monk seals basking in the sun on its golden sands. As well as being a birdwatching paradise, this little islet is a beautiful snorkeling and diving spot. Or simply pack a picnic and enjoy its quiet beaches.
